All members were remarkably skilled players of their respective instruments despite their age (all four members were 23 years old during recording). Chuck Schuldiner: Encyclopedia II - Shred - Music

In the context of an electric guitar, "shredding" refers to a virtuosic, highly technical style of playing the instrument, as exemplified by the virtuosos of the eighties such as Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Tony MacAlpine, Shawn Lane, Steve Vai, Yngwie J. Malmsteen or Joe Satriani. The style of shred guitar is strongly founded in technique and theory. Many shred guitarists are extremely well versed in music theory and classical music. Chuck Schuldiner: Encyclopedia II - Death metal - Early history up to 1991

Death metal is clearly an outgrowth of heavy metal, but the full story is complex and interesting, and is the subject of some debate among fans and musicians. Although growling vocals are usually the prime factor in identifying death metal, this by itself would also include albums such as Welcome to Hell from 1981 by British metal group Venom—an important early Heavy Metal group—where the vocals may be mostly "growling", but the music is not what is generally meant by "death metal" today, as it is irrational ...

Matt Carlson and Scott Olivio formed Tempter in 1984, a metal act covering bay area thrash bands such as Slayer and Metallica. The group's sound became increasingly infused with punk when Phil Hines of Flint hardcore punk band Dissonance joined as a drummer. They juggled band names, first renaming themselves 'Ultraviolence' and then Genocide before recording their first demo in 1984. In spite of their growing popularity in the underground Genocide struggled to survive and faced difficulty maintaining a consistent lineup. In the summer ...

After years of being hailed as a promising newcomer from the proliferous death metal scene of Florida, Cynic collectively mustered its whole creative energy and musical skill to record Focus. Instead of choosing the brutal and hard-hitting approach to metal like most of their contemporaries ...

Chuck Schuldiner: Encyclopedia II - B.C. Rich - History

The B.C. Rich guitar company was started in the late 1970s by the late Bernardo Chavez Rico (or "Bernie, Sr.") as a repair shop primarily for Spanish and Classical-style guitars. Later Bernie expanded into solid-body electrics after repairing the snapped neck of Bo Diddley's legendary Gretsch. Rico adopted the professional name B.C. Rich and began making Les-Paul-inspired guitars. Later models such as the Bich, Eagle, Seagull, Warlock, Mockingbird, Ironbird and others would express the personalities of Rico, staff de ...
