Christmas Dictionary: How I found the holy in the holidays

How I found the holy in the holidays

Merry Christmas. The very words used to make me want to run and hide.

All my life, the holiday season has been a time of wishing for something I never got-and what it seemed like everyone else around me had. Suffice it to say mine was not an Ozzie and Harriet childhood. As an adult, I grew resentful about the holidays. I couldnt stand pretending I liked Christmas when it was just a reminder to me of the happy family I never had.

Christmas Dictionary: God and I by Tom Alter

A personal reflection on God by Tom Alter. It is rather difficult to explain how I feel about God. If at all I see God in anything, it is in nature and love between human beings. I was brought up in a very religious atmosphere. My father was a priest. In fact, folks from my father and mother's side were priests. As a child, I used to pray in school, but it was never done with conviction. As I grew up, I realised that I didn't believe in the concept of one god.

Christmas Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Tomte - The modern tomte

In the 1840's the farm's "nisse" became the bearer of Christmas presents in Denmark, and was then called "julenisse". In 1881, the Swedish magazine Ny Illustrerad Tidning published Viktor Rydberg's poem Tomten, where the tomte is alone awake in the cold Christmas night, pondering the mysteries of life and death. This poem featured the first painting by Jenny Nyström of this traditional Swedish mythical character which she turned into the white-bearded, red-capped friendly figure associated with Christmas ever since. Shortly af ...

Christmas Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Fathers 4 Justice - History

Fathers 4 Justice - Origins. Fathers 4 Justice was founded by Matt O’Connor, a marketing consultant and father of two. O'Connor became incensed with family law after a court temporarily barred him from seeing his two young sons outside of a contact centre, following his separation from his wife in 2000. On 17 December 2002, O’Connor and a small group of supporters staged their first protest by storming the Royal Courts of Justice dressed as Father Christmas. In January 2003 he officially founded Fathers 4 Justice. Initially the group targeted the homes of family court judges and family lawyers' ...

Christmas Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Arrested Development - Music

Besides the short ukulele-based theme song composed by David Schwartz, which is also used as Lindsay's cell phone ringtone, a couple of other songs are featured prominently in Arrested Development. GOB uses Europe's 1986 hit single, "The Final Countdown" in his magic acts, attempting to increase the audience's excitement through improvised dancing and rapid-fire magic tricks. The dramatic, synthesized chords, combined with GOB's high energy and overacting are a clear parody of modern magic acts. ...
