Christine: Encyclopedia II - Columbia Pictures - History

The predecessor of Columbia Pictures, CBC Film Sales Corporation, was founded in 1919 by Harry Cohn, his brother Jack Cohn, and Joe Brandt. The company's reputation was so low that some joked that "CBC" stood for "Corned Beef and Cabbage." Many of the studio's early productions were low-budget affairs; the start-up CBC leased space in a poverty row studio on Hollywood's Gower Street. Following a reorganization, partner Brandt was bought out, and for the next thirty years the Cohn brothers would take on the world (and sometimes ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Filling station - Service stations

In the US, a filling station that also offers such services as oil change and mechanical repairs to automobiles is called a service station. Until the 1970s the vast majority of gas stations were service stations; now only a minority are. This kind of business provided the name for the U.S. comic strip Gasoline Alley, where a number of the characters worked. In the UK, a 'service station' refers to much larger facilities, usually attached to motorways (see Motorway service area (UK)) or major trunk routes, which provide ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Filling station - Differences in fuel dispensers

In Europe, the customer selects one of several color coded nozzles depending on the type of fuel required. The filler pipe of unleaded fuel is smaller than the one for leaded (substitute) ones. The tank filler opening has a corresponding diameter. This is to prevent filling the tank with the wrong fuel. Leaded fuel damages the catalytic converter. In some European countries, leaded fuel is no longer generally available, o ...

Filling station - Gas station maps. U.S.A. gas stations previously offered free road maps as a strategy to build brand loyalty, but the oil companies stopped distributing free maps in the 1970s. Christine: Encyclopedia II - Filling station - Smoking static electricity and mobile phone use

It is forbidden to use open flame and, in some places, a mobile phone on the forecourt of a gas station. This is because of the risk of igniting gasoline vapor. The safety issue with mobile phones, however, is disputed. While mobile phones can distract people and increase the chance of an accident occurring, there is no significant danger from the radio waves emitted. In fact, many petrol statio ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Have I Got News For You - Controversy and litigation

When Paula Yates appeared on the program in October 1995, she feigned outrage and offence at Hislop's verbal jabs about her being married to Michael Hutchence, whom he accused of "beating up journalists", and the alleged poor quality of her autobiography, and Merton's and the host's script's jokes concerning her breast enlargement surgery. Yates eventually called Hislop the "sperm of the devil" (she presumably meant "spawn of the devil"), an outburst that earned her more derision. (Including Ian Hislop saying, "Even your insults emanate from ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Filling station - History of American filling stations

As automobiles became popular in the United States, the need for gas stations arose. The mass-production techniques for automobiles by Henry Ford allowed consumers to purchase cars at an affordable price. This increase in car ownership resulted in a greater demand for filling stations. The first gas station was built in 1907 by Standard Oil of California (now ChevronTexaco) and were known to motorists as "filling stations". Standard Oil began erecting roadside signs of their logos as advertising for their gas stations. Filling station ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Ronald Reagan - Early political career

Ronald Regan was originally a Democrat, supporting Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal. Indeed in the late 1940s he was one of the most visible speakers in the country defending president Harry S. Truman. By the early 1960s he had became a staunch social and fiscal conservative, and, in 1976, said "fascism was really the basis of the New Deal." He first major political role was president of the Screen Actors Guild, the labor union that included most Hollywood actors, but which, he claimed, was being inflitrated by Communists. On January 11, 1989, Reagan addressed the nation one last time on television from the Oval Office of the White House, nine days before handing over the presidency to George H. W. Bush. After Bush's inauguration, Reagan returned to his estate, Rancho del Cielo, near Santa Barbara, California, to write his autobiography, ride his horses, and chop wood. He eventually moved to a new home in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. As of 2005, Reagan is one of only three presidents to serve two full terms since the adoption of the 22nd A ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Ronald Reagan - Religious beliefs

Reagan was a committed Christian from his childhood, and frequently addressed Christian groups. (He rarely attended church until leaving office, when he became a member and regular attendee of Bel Air Presbyterian Church.) He argued that communism's atheistic worldview was one of its worst features. In a March 1978 letter to a liberal Methodist minister who was skeptical about Christ's divinity—and accused Reagan of a "limited Sunday school level theology"—Reagan argued strongly for Christ's divinity. Even though Reagan was firml ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Stephen King - Other writers

Stephen King is an open fan of the late H.P. Lovecraft and incorporated several of his techniques (such as subtle connections between all of his tales as well the more patent recurring use of afflicted New England towns Castle Rock and Derry for Lovecraft's Arkham, Dunwich and Innsmouth) into his novels but differs most markedly in his extensive characterisation, effective dialogue, and positively resolved ending ...

Christine: Encyclopedia II - Ronald Reagan - Presidential campaigns

Reagan's first attempt to gain the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 was unsuccessful. He tried again in 1976 against incumbent Gerald Ford, but was narrowly defeated at the Republican National Convention. The 1976 campaign was a critical moment for Ronald Reagan's political development. Gerald Ford was largely a symbol of the "old guard" of the Republican party. Reagan's success was remarkable considering Ford's status as an incumbent President. At the convention in 1976, Reagan gave a stirring speech in which he discussed t ...
