chisel: Encyclopedia - Chisel

A chisel is a tool for carving and/or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal. A chisel, typically made of hardened or tempered steel, or more rarely, common steel, consists of a sharpened end (called the blade) attached to a straight handle. The handle and blade of some types of chisels are made in one piece. In use, a worker forces the chisel into the material to cut the material. The driving force may be manually applied or applied using a mallet or hammer. In industrial use, a hydraulic ram or falling weight ('triphammer') d ...

Chisels have a wide variety of uses. Many types of chisels have been devised, each specially suited to its intended use. Different types of chisels may be constructed quite differently, in terms of blade width or length, as well as shape and hardness of blade. They may have wooden handles attached or may be made entirely of one piece of metal. Chisel - Woodworking chisels. Woodworking chisels range from quite small hand tools for tiny detail, to large chisels used to remove big sections of wood, in 'roughi ...

chisel: Encyclopedia II - Cold Chisel - Beginnings

The band formed in Adelaide in 1973 as a heavy metal band called Orange around keyboard player Don Walker and original bassist Les Kascmarek and while hard rock remained at the core of their sound Cold Chisel displayed a remarkable versatility. When Kascmarek left in 1975, Walker became the major creative force of the band. Built around Walker's superb songwriting, the group also featured the dazzling guitar and vocal talents of Ian Moss and the enormously powerful lead vocals of Scot ...

chisel: The Christ of the New Age Movement Ð Part II

"Who do you say I am?" (Luke 9:20, NIV) The question was first asked of Peter by Christ nineteen centuries ago, and has continued since then to the present day to be the litmus test of spiritual authenticity. Perhaps never in the history of the Christian church has this question been more relevant than it is today. One reason for this is that New Agers have taken the New Testament sculpture (if you will) of Christ, crafted an esoteric/mystical chisel, and hammered away at this sculpture until a completely new image has been formed.

chisel: Encyclopedia II - Cold Chisel - Reputation

The band is often the subject of somewhat classist disdain for its particular popularity among one generation of working-class men (roughly, those born in the 60s and 70s). This is in spite of the fact that they were one of the most broadly popular and best-selling bands of the day, often featured on the nationwide pop show Countdown, and were widely acknowledged as one of Australia's most accomplished live acts. Cold Chisel remains one of Australia's highest-selling bands, with sales in excess o ...

chisel: Encyclopedia II - Cold Chisel - The Revival

Throughout the 80s and most of the 90s, the band was courted to reform but obstinately refused. Eventually, however, Cold Chisel got back together in 1999 for a new CD release, titled The Last Wave of Summer, and an associated concert tour. They did so again in 2003 for the "Ringside" concert tour, and in early 2005 they performed at the "Wave Aid" tsunami benefit concert. ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - Celt tool

Celt (pron. 'selt') is an archaeological term formally used to describe long thin prehistoric stone or bronze adzes and other axe-like tools and hoes. Its use came about from a misreading of Job 19:24 in the Sixto-Clementine edition of the Latin Vulgate Bible where the certe in Stylo ferreo, et plumbi lamina, vel certe sculpantur in silice was read as celte. A 'Celte' was wrongly assumed to be a type of ancient chisel when in fact is was a mistranslation of "indeed." During the late 11th century, the word a ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - Caulking

Caulking is a process used to seal the seams in wooden boats, in order to make them watertight, or to close up crevices in buildings against water, air, dust or insects. Caulking - Marine Use. A traditional method of caulking used oakum, which consists of pieces of untwisted rope soaked in tar. The same effect may be achieved by using a caulking mallet and a chisel-like device called a caulking iron to put double-wound cotton strands into the gaps. An old term for caulk in a mar ...

chisel: Encyclopedia II - Cold Chisel - The Break-Up

By 1983 the band had reached the zenith of their career in Australia and with overseas markets reluctant to accept them, Cold Chisel began to disintegrate. Their abortive US sojourn was commemorated in Barnes' excoriating rocker "You Got Nothing I Want" from the Circus Animals album, an emotional volume created from the frustration of the band’s experiences overseas. Increasing internal tensions and the pressures of touring took their toll and Steve Prestwich -- who was often in conflict with Barnes -- left the band, to be re ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - Pickaxe

A pickaxe is a tool with a hard head attached perpendicular to the handle, similar to a pick. One edge is pointed and the other chiseled. The spike is most commonly made of metal, and the handle is most commonly wood or metal. The pointed edge is most often used to break up rocky surfaces. The large momentum of a heavy pickaxe, combined with the small contact area, makes it very effective for this purpose. The chiseled edge is used for cutting through roots. Its handle, without the head, is often used as a baton, for example officially in the British Army: see Club (weapon)#Batons, truncheons, and nights ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - Benchmark

A benchmark is a point of reference for a measurement. The term originates from the chiseled horizontal marks that surveyors made into which an angle-iron could be placed to bracket (bench) a levelling rod, thus ensuring that the levelling rod can be repositioned in the exact same place in the future. For the use of benchmarks in surveying (the origin of the term) see Benchmark (surveying) For the use of benchmarks in computing see Benchmark (computing) For the use of benchmarks in management see

chisel: Encyclopedia - Manuscript

A manuscript (Latin manu scriptus, "written by hand"), strictly speaking, is any written document that is put down by hand, in contrast to being printed or reproduced some other way. Information may be hand-recorded in other ways than in manuscripts, as inscriptions that are chiselled upon a hard material or scratched (the original meaning of graffiti) as with a knife point in plaster or with a stylus on a waxed tablet, (the way Romans made notes), or are in cuneiform writing, impressed with a ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - Ball-peen hammer

A ball-peen hammer is a type of peening hammer used in metalworking. It is distinguished from a point-peen hammer or chisel-peen hammer by having a hemispherical peening head. Though the process of peening has become rarer in metal fabrication, the ball-peen hammer remains useful for many tasks. The original function of the hammer was to "peen" riveted or welded material so that it will exhibit the same elastic behavior as the surrounding material. Specifically, striking the metal imparts a stress at the point of ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - Woodcut

A woodcut is a wooden printing surface used in woodblock printing, a method in which an image is carved into the surface of a piece of wood, with the printing parts remaining level with the surface while the non-printing parts are removed, typically with chisels. The surface is covered with ink by rolling over the surface with an ink-covered roller (brayer), leaving ink upon the flat surface but not in the non-printing areas. Paper is then placed face-down on the woodblock and pressure is applied to the back, either by printing press ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - Wedge mechanics

Technically a portable double inclined plane, a wedge is a simple machine used to separate two objects, or portions of objects, through the application of force, perpendicular to the inclined surfaces, developed by conversion of force applied to the blunt end. The mechanical advantage of a wedge depends on the ratio of its length to its thickness. Examples include axes and nails. Knives and chisels can sometimes be used as wedges, however, they are more fundamentally cutting implements. Oth

chisel: Encyclopedia - Whittling

Whittling is the art of carving shapes out of raw wood with a pocket knife, as in the whittling of a toy boat. It is a tradition that has been practiced worldwide for centuries. The term "whittling" conjures images of old men making shavings while sitting on a bench in front of the general store. The definition of whittling is simply any carving done with a knife. Carving implies the use of chisels, gouges, and a mallet. Some local societies hold whittling festivals and ...

chisel: Encyclopedia - American system of manufacturing

Since parts are interchangeable, it is also possible to separate manufacture from assembly, and assembly may be carried out by semi-skilled labor on an assembly line - an example of the division of labor. In order to eliminate hand tools, Whitney invented new machines to eliminate all skilled operations - introducing a kind of router to replace the chisel, for example.
