Palmer imbued the term "subluxation" with a metaphysical and philosophical meaning. He held that certain dislocations of bones interfered with the "innate intelligence", a kind of spiritual energy or life force dependent upon God that connects the brain to the rest of the body. Palmer claimed that subluxations interfered with the proper communication of this innate intelligence with the rest of the body, and t ...

Chiropractic - Chiropractic subluxation: Encyclopedia II - Subluxation - History: Chiropractic perspective

Vertebral Subluxations are a concept that evolved over decades of research conducted in the chiropractic, osteopathic and medical professions. The term was borrowed from medical literature to designate a disruption of normal nerve activity, theorized to be at the source of noticeable changes in the body. Contrary to unsupported assertions (see below), the concept of subluxation is not a mystical invention of chiropractors. There are historical references going back to Hippocrates to support the long held belief and clinical impression that functio ...

Chiropractic - Chiropractic subluxation: Encyclopedia - Chiropractic

Chiropractic, also known as chiropractic care, is a health care discipline that claims to prevent and treat health problems by using spinal adjustments in order to correct spinal dysfunction, or subluxations. Chiropractic asserts that the brain and nervous system control and coordinate all the body's functions in part through nerve branches that exit from the spinal cord between the vertebrae. Some Chiropractors infer a causal relationship between nerve interference or compression at the spine and subsequent problems in more dis ...

Chiropractic - Chiropractic subluxation: Encyclopedia - Vertebral subluxation

In chiropractic, vertebral subluxation is a condition in which a vertebra has lost its proper juxtaposition with an adjacent vertebra (to an extent less than a luxation) in such a way as to alter nerve function. The existence of subluxation in the sense used by chiropractors is a matter of controversy, and the concept is not recognized by mainstream medicine. See also. Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a therapeutic system based upon the premise that interference with nervous system function predisposes the body to a disease state. The method of work focuses on restoring normal condition by correcting the vertebral segments of the spinal column, which are a primary cause of nerve dysfunction. Central to chiropractic technique is the "adjustment" of the specific spinal vertebra that are out of alignment or subluxated.

Chiropractic - Chiropractic subluxation: Holistic Health Dictionary I on CHIROPRACTIC

CHIROPRACTIC

“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction,” says a law of physics. When a vertebra becomes misaligned (subluxation) due to an external pressure, the Chiropractor can restore the alignment by applying an opposite pressure in the appropriate manner to correct the misalignment.

Subluxation of the vertebra can cause pressure on spinal cord nerve tissues, interfering with the nerves’ ability to conduct impulses to other tissues and organs, thus directly affecting one's overall health. See also below Chiropractic-Network and Kinesiology.

Chiropractic - Chiropractic subluxation: Encyclopedia II - Chiropractic - History

The roots of chiropractic care can be traced all the way back to the beginning of recorded time. Writings from China and Greece written in 2700 B.C. and 1500 B.C. mention spinal manipulation and the maneuvering of the lower extremities to ease low back pain. Hippocrates, the Greek physician, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., also published texts detailing the importance of spinal manipulation. In one of his writings he declares: Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the ...

Chiropractic - Chiropractic subluxation: Encyclopedia II - Chiropractic - Criticism of chiropractic

Critics, including many mainstream medical doctors and scientists, often reject the claims of some chiropractic associations and schools as pseudoscience, quackery, or fraud. Advocates believe at least some of this criticism was encouraged by the American Medical Association during the 1970s and early 1980s in what they have labeled "anti-chiropractic prejudice". In a carefully worded statement, the judge in a trial against the AMA recognized that this skepticism was also the inspiration for the AMA's actions in instituting an illegal ...

Chiropractic - Chiropractic subluxation: Encyclopedia II - Chiropractic - Usage

The use of manipulative therapy — not necessarily chiropractic — is regarded with controversy by medical authorities in many nations. Of interest is that Hippocrates, considered to be the Father of Medicine, describes manipulative therapy utilizing various methods of spinal realignment in his writings. It is covered by many health plans such as Medicare in the United States. Although some medical doctors (MDs) and many doctors of osteopathy (DOs) do perform manipulative therapy, more than 90 percent of the treatment of back pain by manip ...

Contemporary chiropractic is generally divided into three basic schools - straight, mixer, and reform - which differ in their approaches to patient care. However, all chiropractic approaches are, at a minimum, heavily based on the use of manipulation as a treatment for mechanical musculoskeletal dysfunction of the spine and extremities. Straight chiropractors only concern themselves with vertebral subluxation correction. Practitioners often use varying vertebral manipulation techniques known as "adjustments" for th ...
