Chilean peso: Encyclopedia II - Chilean peso - History

The first Chilean peso was introduced in 1817, at a value of 8 Spanish colonial reales. Until 1851, it circulated alongside silver coins denominated in reales and gold coins denominated in escudos (worth 2 pesos). In 1835, copper coins of denominations ½ and 1 centavo were introduced but it was not until 1851 that the real and escudo denominations ceased to be issued and further issues in centavos and décimos (worth 10 centavos) commenced. From 1925, coins and banknotes were issued denominated in cóndores, worth 10 pesos. The escudo replaced the peso ...

In currency, the cent is a monetary unit that equals 1 / 100th of the basic unit of value. It also refers to the coin which is worth one cent. In the United States and Canada, the 1¢ coin is generally known by the nickname penny, alluding to the British coin and unit of that name. Chilean peso: Encyclopedia - Dollar sign

The origin of the dollar sign ("$") has been variously accounted for. Perhaps the most widely accepted explanation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, is that it is the result of the evolution of the Mexican or Spanish "Ps" for pesos, or piastres, or pieces of eight (there is also a separate theory that the dollar sign derives from the number 8.) This theory, derived from a study of old manuscripts, explains that the floating "S" gradually came to be written over the "P", developing a close equiv ...

Chilean peso: Encyclopedia II - ISO 4217 - History

In 1973, the ISO Technical Committee 68 decided to develop codes for the representation of currencies and funds for use in any application of trade, commerce or banking. At the 17th session (February 1978) of the related UN/ECE Group of Experts agreed that the three letter alphabetic codes for International Standard ISO 4217, "Codes for the representation of currencies and funds", would be suitable for use in international trade. Over time, new currencies are created and old currencies are discontinued. Frequently, these changes are d ...

Chilean peso: Encyclopedia II - Currency - History

Currency - Early Currency. The origin of currency is the creation of a circulating medium of exchange based on a store of value. Currency evolved from two basic innovations: the use of counters to assure that shipments arrived with the same goods that were shipped, and the use of silver ingots to represent stored value in the form of grain. Both of these developments had occurred by 2000 BC. This first stage of currency, where metals were used to represent stored value, and symbols to represent commodities ...

Chilean peso: Encyclopedia II - Currency - Modern currencies

To find out which currency is used in a particular country, start at the countries of the world or look at the table of historical exchange rates. Nowadays ISO have introduced a system, ISO 4217, using three-letter codes to define currency (as opposed to simple names or currency signs), in order to remove the confusion that there are dozens of currencies called the dollar and many called the franc. Even the pound is used in nearly a dozen different countries, all, of course, with wildly differing values. In general, the three-l ...

Chilean peso: Encyclopedia II - Currency - Privately-issued currencies

From the earliest times token coins were issued by companies in remote parts of the world to overcome the shortage of circulating currency. Several large companies issue points to their customers, to be redeemed for products and services produced by that company. Often, a network of companies will join to share in the offering and redemption of points. While these can hardly be considered stable currency systems, they present many of the same features as "legitimate" currency: they are a store of value, issued in discrete units; they ...

Chilean peso: Encyclopedia II - Currency - Local currencies

In economics, a local currency is a currency not backed by a national government, and intended to trade only in a small area. Advocates such as Jane Jacobs argue that this enables an economically depressed region to pull itself up, by giving the people living there a medium of exchange that they can use to exchange services and locally-produced goods (In a broader sense, this is the original purpose of all money.) Opponents of this concept argue that local currency creates a barrier which can interfere with economies of ...
