Chevrolet Silverado: Encyclopedia II - Chevrolet Silverado - 1999

Released in 1999, this was the first redesign of Chevrolet's full-size pickup line since 1988. The truck was now called the Silverado, which was a trim line of the Chevrolet C/K previously. It is available in many different versions, including 4x4, crew cab, and dualie. Engine options include the Vortec 4300 V6, Vortec 4800 V8, and Vortec 5300 V8. Two versions of the 6.0 L Vortec 6000 were added, a 300 hp (224 kW) version in 2001, and a 345 hp (257 kW) "VortecMAX" version for 2003. The Silverado will get a new grille design for 2006 and will be replaced by ...

Chevrolet Silverado: Encyclopedia II - Ford F-Series - 1997

Ford took the aero styling to its conclusion for 1997 with an extremely round nose on the new F-series. The "Super Duty" F series did not yet exist, so an F-250 was offered which was an F-150 with heavier duty axles and suspension, along with odd 7 lug wheels. With the arrival of the Super Duty, this F-250 "light duty" was offered as the "7700" package for the F-150 (noted on the tailgate emblem). A wide variety of body options were available: regular cab and SuperCab, standard or flareside boxes, and short and long beds. A new Lightning was introduced in 1999, and Harley-Davidson and King Ranch versions were also created. In ...

The first generation of the Dakota was produced from 1987 through 1996. Straight-4 and V6 engines were offered along with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Four wheel drive was available only with the V6. Both 6.5 ft (2 m) and 8 ft (2.4 m) beds were offered. General Motors replaced the Tahoe and Yukon on the new GMT900 platform in late 2005 as a 2007 model. The GMC Yukon features a monolithic grille and headlights, while the Chevrolet Tahoe's grille is divided by a body colored bar similar to the chrome bar found on most of today's Tahoe's. While the Tahoe's hood now feat ...

Chevrolet Silverado: Encyclopedia II - General Motors C/K Trucks - 1967-1972

A new, more modern look came in 1967, along with more available creature comforts such as air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. It was with this revision of the C/K truck that General Motors began to market trucks towards people other than those who would simply use them as work vehicles and nothing else. One 1968 Chevrolet magazine ad ran with the line "A Chevy pickup is built to be womanhandled." This was evident throughout its construction; the majority of half-ton 1967-1972 trucks were shipped with a coil spring trailing ar ...

Chevrolet Silverado: Encyclopedia II - NASCAR - History

NASCAR - Early History. Many early racing drivers were involved in bootlegging. The runners would modify their cars in order to create a faster, more maneuverable car. The next logical step for the owners of these cars was to race them. These races were popular entertainment in the rural South, and they are most closely associated with the Wilkes County region of North Carolina. Most races in those days were of modified cars, street vehicles which were lightened and reinforced. NASCAR was co-founded by Wil ...

Chevrolet Silverado: Encyclopedia II - Car and Driver Ten Best - Top Manufacturers

Further breaking down the marques into their controlling manufacturers amplifies Honda's dominance of the contest over the last 23 years. Note that this number is skewed by the multiple products picked over the years. For example, the Chrysler minivans were picked three times, totalling 8 "points" for DaimlerChrysler from three wins. The Diamond-Star cars were a similar problem, double-dipping "points" for both Mitsubishi, Plymouth, and Eagle. These situations were ...

Chevrolet Silverado: Encyclopedia II - Advanced Hybrid System 2 - Joint venture

When GM and DaimlerChrysler engineers realized how similar their hybrid work was, they decided to join forces and share technology. This parallels the work of Ford Motor Company and Toyota, who also independently developed similar hybrid systems and shared patents. The GM/DaimlerChrysler partnership was announced on December 13, 2004 with Dieter Zetsche of DaimlerChrysler joining Rick Wagoner of GM on stage with a prototype. The agr ...

Chevrolet Silverado: Encyclopedia II - Pickup truck - Miscellaneous

Since about 2001 hybrids of sport utility vehicles and pickups have appeared, which are similar to an SUV except that the 3rd row of seats (or enclosed cargo area) is replaced by a short open truck bed. The Chevrolet Avalanche is the most well-known example of this. Whilst pickups are commonly used by tradespeople the world over, they are popular as personal transport in Australia, the United States, and Canada, where they share some of the image of the SUV and are commonly criticised on similar grounds. Many pickup trucks have four wheel drive, aggressively-treaded tyres and high ground clearance, and thus ...
