| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Leon Trotsky - Contributions to theoryMain article: Trotskyism.
Trotsky considered himself a "Bolshevik-Leninist", arguing for the establishment of a vanguard party. He considered himself an advocate of orthodox Marxism. His politics differed in many respects from those of Stalin or Mao, most importantly in his rejection of the theory of Socialism in One Country and his declaring the need for an international "permanent revolution". Numerous Fourth Internationalist groups around the world continue to describe themselves as Trotskyist and see themselves as standing ...

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Soviet War - Names and dates of the warThe war is referred to by several names. "Polish-Soviet War" may be the most common, but is potentially confusing since "Soviet" is usually thought of as relating to the Soviet Union, which (by contrast with "Soviet Russia") did not officially come into being until December 1922. Alternative names include "Russo-Polish War [or Polish-Russian War] of 1919-21" (to distinguish it from earlier Polish-Russian wars) and "Polish-Bolshevik War." This second term (or just "Bolshevik War" (Polish: Wojna bolszewicka) is most common in Polish sou ...

Leon Trotsky - Childhood and family 1879-1896.
Trotsky's date of birth is October 26 (Julian calendar) or November 7 (Gregorian calendar), 1879, the day of the October revolution of 1917. Trotsky was born in Yanovka, Kherson Province, Ukraine, a small village 15 miles from the nearest post office. He was the fifth child of a wealthy but illiterate Jewish farmer, David Leontyevish Bronstein (or Bronshtein, 1847 - 1922) and Anna Bronstein (d. 1910). Although the family had Jewish ancestry, it was not religious and ...

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - NKVD - Evolution of the NKVD structure and tasksAfter the October Revolution of 1917, the Bolsheviks dissolved the old police and sought the creation of Workers and Peasants' Militsiya under the supervision of the NKVD of the RSFSR. However, the NKVD apparatus was overwhelmed by functions inherited directly from the Imperial MVD, such as the supervision of the local governments and firefighting, and the new proletarian workforce was largely inexperienced.
Realizing that it was left with no capable security force, the Council of People's Commissars of the Russian SFSR created ...

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Leon Trotsky - The last exile 1929-1940Trotsky was deported from the Soviet Union in February 1929. His first station in exile was the Turkish island of Prinkipo (now Büyükada) off the Istanbul coast, where he stayed four years. There were many former White Army officers in Istanbul, which put Trotsky's life in danger, but a number of Trotsky's European supporters volunteered to serve as bodyguards and assured his safety.
In 1933 Trotsky was offered asylum in France by Daladier. He stayed first at Royan, then at Barbizon. He was not allowed to visit Paris. In 1935 it was ...

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Russian jokes - Political jokesEvery nation is fond of this category, but in the Soviet Union telling political jokes was in a sense an extreme sport (like mountaineering): according to Article 58 (RSFSR Penal Code) "anti-Soviet propaganda" was a potentially capital offense.
An advisor asks Party Chairman Leonid Brezhnev: "Leonid Ilyich, I've heard you are a great fan and collector of political anecdotes? How many do you have already?" / "Twelve labor camps!"

"My wife has been going to cooking school for three years." / "She must really cook well by now!" / "No, they've only reached the part about the Great October Socialist Revolution so far."
Others poked fun at the time it could take for consumer goods in the Soviet Union to be delivered:

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Augustus Agar - Operation LucidAgar was in charge of planning and carrying out Operation Lucid in September 1940, an attempt to hit the German wooden invasion barges at Boulogne and Calais, France, with incendiary material and set them alight. It was a desperate time and any measure, however risky, that could frustrate the German invasion plans was welcome. The plan had the personal backing of Winston Churchill.
Accompanied by various auxiliary vessels, Agar set off for Boulogne several times in September and October of 1940 with four small ancient oil tanke ...

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Augustus Agar - Coastal ForcesOn November 25, 1941, Agar was appointed Chief Staff Officer to the Rear Admiral commanding Coastal Forces. This was a critical position as the Germans were vigorously attacking the coastal convoys running down the English Channel and up and down the east coast from Scotland to the northeast of England down to London. The threats were from aircraft, mines and fast German motor torpedo boats, called E boats. Britain had let her coastal forces deterio ...

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Augustus Agar - The Baltic and the BolsheviksThe end of the war found him at the CMB base at Osea Island in Essex, England. He was asked in late 1918 by Sir George Mansfield Smith-Cumming, head of the foreign section of the British Secret Intelligence Service, to volunteer for a dangerous mission in the Baltic Sea where Coastal Motor Boats (CMBs) were to be used to ferry British agents back and forth from Bolshevik Russia. The shallow draught and high speed of the CMB made it ideal for landing on enemy occupied shores and making a quick getaway. The chief British agents in Russia were Sir Paul Dukes and Sidney Reilly. During this time Agar and his two ...

| | | | Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Augustus Agar - Discussion of the LossThe British paid dearly for underestimating Japanese capabilities. After Pearl Harbor, the loss of HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales and the fall of Singapore one might have expected greater caution. It was the sad end to a fine career. Augustus Agar's seafaring days ended close to where he was born 52 years before.
It is easy to assess blame afterwards, but it did seem unwise to sent the Dorsetshire back to Colombo for a second time to finish her refit with a huge Japanese Fleet threatening. This was Somerville ...
