Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Nikolay Gumilyov - Later poems and death

In 1920 Gumilyov co-founded the All-Russia Union of Writers. Gumilyov made no secret of his anti-communist views. He also crossed himself in public and didn't care to dissimulate his contempt for half-literate Bolsheviks. On August 3, 1921 he was arrested by Cheka on allegation that he was a monarchist. Most historians believe that it was one of the first entirely fabricated cases by Cheka. On August 24 Petrograd Cheka decreed execution of all 61 participants of Tagantsev Conspiracy, including Nikolai Gumilev. The exact date ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Clown - Cooperative bits

A clown duo might employ a number of cooperative "bits" to help them create an improvisational performance. Using this technique allows both clowns to participate in what looks like a well-rehearsed sketch, but might well be a mere placeholder/spacefiller for a missing act, or used to cover "prop failure" etc. Particularly in a Circus or Variety show, clowns are often relied on to perform "at the drop of a hat" and a well-prepared clown will not only have a large repertoire of bits, but will remain alert when off-stage. In accordance with th ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Russian jokes - Political jokes

Every nation is fond of this category, but in the Soviet Union telling political jokes was in a sense an extreme sport (like mountaineering): according to Article 58 (RSFSR Penal Code) "anti-Soviet propaganda" was a potentially capital offense. A judge walks out of his chambers, laughing his head off. A colleague approaches him, and asks him why he is laughing. "Oh, you should hear the joke for which I just gave that guy ten years." An advisor asks Party Chairman Leonid Brezhnev: "Leonid Ilyich, I've heard you are a great fan and collector of political anecdotes? How many do ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Clown - Clown skills

It has been said "clowns can do anything", mostly because clowns have such wildly varying performances. "Everyone knows" a clown can do magic, juggle, balance things on his nose, do backflips, etc, but clowns might be called on to do just about anything. While there are ample media and amatuer resources for developing a clown's skill set there is currently, the clown conservatory at the San Fransisco center for circus arts is the only professional year l ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Soviet War - Aftermath

According to the British historian A. J. P. Taylor, the Polish-Bolshevik War "largely determined the course of European history for the next twenty years or more. […] Unavowedly and almost unconsciously, Soviet leaders abandoned the cause of international revolution." The Bolsheviks' defeat in the war prevented Poland from becoming another Soviet republic and possibly spared Germany, Czechoslovakia and other nearby states from a similar fate. Much of what Poland had won during the 1920 war was lost in peace negotiations that were ch ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Clown - Customs and traditions

As with any ancient artform, fools, clowns and other related artists have developed customs, traditions and even superstitions regarding their chosen avocation. Many of these customs are widely held, and considered fundamental to the Art of Clowning. Clown - A knock is a plug. Professional clowns typically do not make disparaging remarks about other clowns, not only because this is considered petty, but because of the tradition that "a knock is a plug", in other words, to mention a poor performer by name is to provide that performer with undue advertisement ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Military history of the Soviet Union - Collapse of the Soviet Union and the military

The political and economic chaos of the late 1980s and early 1990s soon erupted into the disintegration of the Warsaw Pact and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The political chaos and rapid economic liberalization in Russia had an enormously negative impact on the strength and funding of the military. In 1985, the Soviet military had about 5.3 million men; by 1990 the number declined to about four million. At the time the Soviet Union dissolved, the residual forces belonging to the Russian Federation w ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - History of anti-Semitism - The 20th century

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Roman Catholic Church adhered to a distinction between "good anti-Semitism" and "bad anti-Semitism". The "bad" kind promoted hatred of Jews because of their descent. This was considered un-Christian because the Christian message was intended for all of humanity regardless of ethnicity; anyone could become a Christian. The "good" kind criticized alleged Jewish conspiracies to control newspapers, banks, and other institutions, to care only about accumulation of wealth, etc. Many Catholic bishops w ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Vladimir Lenin - Revolutionary

Upon graduation, Lenin took on a job as an assistant to a lawyer. He worked for a couple of years in Samara, Russia, then in 1893 moved to St. Petersburg. Rather than settling into a legal career, he became more involved in revolutionary propaganda efforts and the study of Marxism. On December 7, 1895, he was arrested and held by authorities for fourteen months, then exiled to the village of Shushenskoye in Siberia. In July 1898, he married Nadezhda Krupskaya, who was a socialist activist. In April 1899, he published the book The D ...

Cheka: Encyclopedia II - Russian Civil War - Overview

The war was fought mainly between the "Reds" who were the communists and revolutionaries, and the "Whites" who were the monarchists, conservatives, liberals and socialists who opposed the Bolshevik Revolution. Also, a group of nationalist and anarchist movements known as the "Greens", or sometimes the Black Army for the latter, played a much smaller part in the war, harrying both the Reds and the Whites, and sometimes even each other. In addition, the Entente and some other countries intervened on the side ...

At the end of the Civil War, Soviet Russia was exhausted and near ruin. The droughts of 1920 and 1921 and the 1921 famine worsened the disaster. The war had taken an estimated 8 million lives including at least one million soldiers of the Russian Red Army who died in battles. Fifty thousand Russian Communists were killed by the counter-revolutionary Whites. The economic loss to Soviet Russia was 50 billion rubles. The industrial production ...

Other than the advantages of the Red Army, their victory was also partially due to the weaknesses of the Whites. The Whites consisted of a coalition of many different diverse groups, all with different ideologies and objectives. Many peasants didn’t support the Whites. The peasants were worried that a White victory would restore the Russian nobles to power and the nobles would then take back their land. While some White factions supported radical change and land reform, other factions did want to re ...

The Reds had many strengths. They held the central, industrial area, which gave them control over railways and the production of munitions. Trotsky was a superb leader, he was co-ordinated, an excellent organiser who was experienced (he fought in the October revolution). The Reds were united in the face of a common enemy, they feared the Tsar’s return and they made use of the fear of invasion and newfound patriotism in the people. They relied on no-one else, which made it easier to co-ordinate defence. The peasants feared the Tsar’s return and tha ...

Lenin's brain was removed before his body was embalmed. The Soviet government commissioned the well-known German neuroscientist Oskar Vogt to study Lenin's brain and to locate the precise location of the brain cells that are responsible for genius[citation needed]. The study was performed in Vladimir Bekhterev's Institute of the Brain. Vogt published a paper on the brain in 1929 where he reported that some pyramidal neurons in the third layer of Lenin's cerebral cortex were very large. However the conclusion of its relevanc ...

In 1918, with the end of the First World War, the map of Central and Eastern Europe had drastically changed. As Germany's defeat rendered her plans for the creation of the Mitteleuropa puppet states obsolete, and as Russia sank into the depths of the Russian Civil War, the newly emergent countries of that region saw a chance for real independence and were not prepared to easily relinquish this rare gift of fate. At the same time, the Russians saw these territories as rebellious Russian provinces but were unable to react swiftly, as Russia wa ...
