Chastity, in many religious and cultural contexts, is a virtue concerning the state of the mind and body. Due to prohibitions of sexual intimacy in Abrahamic religions deriving from the Decalogue and Mosaic law, the term has become closely associated with premarital sexual abstinence in Western culture; however, in the context of religion, the term remains applicable to persons in all states, single or married, clerical or lay, and has implications beyond sexual temperance. Chastity: Encyclopedia - Chastity belt

A chastity belt is a locking item of clothing designed to prevent sexual intercourse and possibly masturbation. The purpose may also be to protect the wearer from rape or temptation. Devices have been created for males and females. The use of such devices against another's will would now be considered abusive in most western societies. (But see consent (BDSM) for "consensual non-consensuality") The term "Chastity belt" is also used metaphorically in modern English to mean an overly protective device or practice. The term ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Chastity comic book

Chastity is a comic book published by Chaos! Comics. The character was born in the late 1960's to a middle-class American family. Restless, Chastity ran away to London to become a stage actress but was denied the opportunity. She worked at a punk rock clothing store and then as a band roadie. Her life changed when she was turned into a vampire and is mysteriously "undetectable" to other vampires, a trait that makes her very efficient as an assassin. Seeing these skills, she was recruited by the Cabal, a secret society that rules the u

Chastity: Breaking Past Life Vows and Pacts

Breaking Past Life Vows and Pacts

Many of us have had past lives in monastic environments, religious orders, secret sects and so on. Some of us will have made strong vows in the name of God with much emotion and determination, believing that they were right, and perhaps they were for us at that time. A vow made with strong intent carries over into other lifetimes unless a time limit is specified, which is usually not the case. We may have made vows of chastity, celibacy, poverty, silence, suffering, cleanliness, purity, everlasting love or of vengeance against someone who hurt or tricked us. All these prior vows are limitations that can constrict our souls and restrict our freedom.

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Celibacy

Celibacy may refer either to being unmarried or to sexual abstinence. An oath of celibacy is a promise not to enter into marriage. Some writers prefer this usage of "celibacy", while others use it interchangeably as a synonym for abstinence. Some writers on sexuality draw a distinction between abstinence and celibacy, stating that celibacy means refraining from any sexual activity with a partner. They argue that this can be empowering, as it still allows that person to be "sexual" (through, for example, masturbation). This would not, however, be refered to as chaste celibacy, ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Religious aspects of marriage

In virtually all religions, marriage is a long-term union between two people and is established with ceremonies and rituals. The two people are most commonly a man and a woman, though many societies have permitted polygamous marriages, and same-sex marriage is now acknowledged in some places. Many religions have extensive teachings regarding marriage. Most Christian churches give some form of blessing to a marriage; the wedding ceremony typically includes some sort of pledge by the community to support the couple's relationship. In th ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Sexual abstinence

Sexual abstinence is the practice of voluntarily refraining from some or all aspects of sexual activity. Common reasons to deliberately abstain from the physical expression of sexual desire include religious or philosophical reasons (eg chastity), material reasons (to prevent conception or STD transmission), lack of suitable partners, or to conform to legal injunctions. Sexual abstinence has been debated since antiquity, and has been discussed both within the heterosexual and the homosexual spheres. See Platonic love ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Promiscuity

Promiscuity is the practice of making relatively unselective, casual and indiscriminate choices. The term is most commonly applied to sexual behavior, where it refers to sex that is not in the framework of a steady sexual relationship, or occurs in multiple, simultaneous sexual relationships. A promiscuous person may nevertheless be quite selective in their choice of sexual partners. A common concern about promiscuity is the potential to run a higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Purity ring

Purity rings, or Chastity rings are a symbol of virginity in religious cultures. A person who wears a purity ring is vowing to save sex for marriage. The ring is usually worn on the left ring finger. There is no particular style for purity rings; however, many have a cross in their design in reference to Jesus Christ. A reporter David Bario in his article posted in Chicago Tribune, Rutland Herald (on March 29, 2005) and at several other news websites wrote: "Under the Bush administration, organ ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Abstinence

Abstinence is a voluntary forbearance from indulging an appetite or craving. Most frequently, the term refers to abstention from sexual intercourse, alcohol, or food. The practice can arise from religious prohibitions or practical considerations. It may arise from an ascetical element present in most religions, or from a subjective need for spiritual discipline. It is meant to elevate the believer beyond the normal life of desire, to a chosen ideal, by following a path of renunciation. Because the regimen is a conscious act, fr ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Castigation

Castigation (from the Latin castigatio), or chastisement (via the French châtiment), is the infliction of severe (moral or corporal) punishment. One who administers a castigation is a castigator or chastiser. In earlier times, castigation means restoring one to a religiously pure state, called chastity. In ancient Rome, a magistrate, called a censor (in the original sense, rather then the later politicized evolution), castigated in the name of the pagan state rel ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Circumcellions

The Circumcellions, also known as the "agonistici", were a donatist sect in North Africa that overvalued martyrdom and had a special devotion for the martyrs, rendering honors to their graves. The Circumcellions had come to regard martyrdom as the true Christian virtue (as Church Father Tertullian said, a martyr's death day was actually his birthday), and thus came to disregard chastity, sobriety, humility, charity, and other virtues. Instead, they focused on br ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Infibulation

Infibulation, in its modern use of the word, is the practice of surgical closure of the female labia majora by sewing them together to seal off the female genitalia, leaving only a small hole for the passage of urine and menstrual blood. This is usually done on young girls around the onset of puberty, to ensure chastity. It is usually linked with female circumcision, or removal of the clitoris and, usually, the labia minora as well, in order to render women theoretically less sexual. Female circumcision is often confused w ...

Chastity: Encyclopedia - Capital virtues

The seven capital virtues oppose the seven capital sins and are not to be confused with the "cardinal virtues" of Catholic lore. Humility is the opposite of pride; generosity is the opposite of avarice; brotherly love is the opposite of envy; meekness is the opposite of wrath; chastity is the opposite of lust; moderation is the opposite of gluttony; and zeal is the opposite of sloth. The capital virtues are distinguished from the four cardinal virtues of Christianity. The cardinal virtues are prudence, temperance, fortitude, and justice. The original idea was set down by Plato and was ad ...
