Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Charles Fort - Overview

Charles Hoy Fort was born in 1874 in Albany, New York, of Dutch ancestry. His grocer father was something of an authoritarian, and was reportedly abusive. Some have suggested that Fort's distrust of authority has its roots in his father's treatment. In any case, Fort developed a strong sense of independence in his youth. While still rather young, Fort was a budding naturalist who would collect sea shells, minerals, and birds. Curious and intelligent, the young Fort did not excel at school, though he was quite a wit and full of knowledge about the world — ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Charles Fort - Fort and the unexplained
Fort's relationship with the study of anomalous phenomena is frequently misunderstood and misrepresented. For over thirty years Charles Fort sat in the libraries of New York and London, assiduously reading scientific journals, newspapers, and magazines, collecting notes upon phenomena that lay outside the accepted theories and beliefs of the time. Examples of these phenomena include many of what are variously referred to as occult, supernatural, and paranormal — for instance, teleportation (a term Fort is generally credited with coi ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Charles Fort - Followers and fans of Fort

Fort's work has inspired very many to consider themselves as Forteans. The first of these was the screenwriter Ben Hecht, who in a review of The Book of the Damned declared "I am the first disciple of Charles Fort... henceforth, I am a Fortean". Precisely what is encompassed by 'Fortean' is a matter of great debate; the term is widely applied from every position from a Fortean purists dedicated to Fort's methods and interests, to those with open and active acceptence of the actuality of paranormal phenomena, a position Fort wou ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia - Charles Fort

Charles Hoy Fort (August 6, 1874 - May 3, 1932) was an American writer and researcher into anomalous phenomena. (According to some sources he was born on August 9.) Fort is best known for his books, in which he compiled — with his characteristic wry, tongue in cheek sense of humor — many accounts of odd, inexplicable or strange events, usually taken from newspapers or scientific journals. Fort's books sold well, and remain in print. The term Forteana is sometimes used to describe various anomalous phenomena.Including:

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Extraterrestrial hypothesis - Charles Fort

Charles Fort was another who suggested that odd aerial phenomena might have extraterrestrial origins. He wrote four popular books in the early 1900’s, collecting from newspapers and scientific journals all manner of strange reports which, Fort argued, were ignored or marginalized by mainstream science. Fort occasionally suggested that extraterrestrials were responsible for a wide variety of events: Inexplicable artifacts, mysterious disappearances (and strange appearances), and bizarre lights reported in the sky or in the oceans. Je ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia - Charles Bonnet syndrome

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is named after the Swiss naturalist Charles Bonnet. In 1760 he described a condition in which vivid, complex visual hallucinations (fictive visual percepts) occur in mentally healthy people. He first documented it in his 87 year old grandfather, who was nearly blind from cataracts in both eyes but perceived men, women, birds, carriages, buildings, tapestries and scaffolding patterns. Most who are affected by this are people with visual imp ...

Book of the Damned was the first published nonfiction work of the author Charles Fort, first published in 1919. Charles Fort: Encyclopedia - Wild Talents

Wild Talents is the fourth and final book written by paranormal author Charles Fort, published in 1932. Wild Talents - Overview. Like Fort's previous works, this book deals largely with a number of anomalous phenomena, as well as his ongoing attack on scientific dogma. The book deals for the most part with trying to fit the various phenomena described into Fort's new theory of psychic and mental power - the "Wild Talents" of the title - that are detailed below. Though not as well-known ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia - Damned knowledge

Damned knowledge, a term coined by Charles Fort (who collected and published accounts of many anomalous phenomena), is knowledge suppressed, discounted, or not recognized as real because it does not fit into the dominant paradigm of the time (or, sometimes, because it fits too well). Reasons for suppression of knowledge include conflict with the political tenor and public authorities of the times, est ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia - William R. Corliss

William R. Corliss is a collector of data regarding anomalous phenomena. Since 1978, Corliss has published a number of works in the "Sourcebook Project": Each volume is devoted to a scientific field (archaeology, astronomy, geology, et cetera) and features articles culled mainly from scientific journals. Corliss was inspired by Charles Fort, who also collected reports of unusual phenomena, but unlike Fort, Corliss offers little in the way of his own opinions or editorial comments, preferring to let the articles speak for ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Extraterrestrial hypothesis - History

In many people’s minds, the ETH is linked to the mass interest in UFO’s which began in the late 1940’s. For example, literature professor Terry Matheson writes that "sightings of unidentifiable lights the sky had been taking place for centuries, but only after Kenneth Arnold’s ‘flying saucer’ sighting on June 24, 1947, near Mt. Rainier, Washington, were they explicitly theorized to be extraterr ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Extraterrestrial hypothesis - Pre 1900's

Though not specifically linked to flying saucers or odd aerial lights, it's perhaps worth noting that there is a long history of claims of contact with non-earthly intelligences. As early as the 1700's, people like Emanuel Swedenborg were claiming to be in contact with inhabitants of other planets; Helena Blavatsky and others would later make similar claims. Extraterrestrial hypothesis - Mystery Airships. In the late 1800’s there was a wave of mystery airship reports across the United States. Some accoun ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Extraterrestrial hypothesis - Post-Arnold ETH Ideas

Not long after Kenneth Arnold's sightings, UFOs were linked with speculation that they had non-earthly origins, including by Kenneth Arnold himself. In fact, this link has become so strong that it's precipitated a degree of semantic debate and confusion regarding the phrases "UFO" or "unidentified flying object". Extraterrestrial hypothesis - Chronological List of Notable Quotes and Studies Supporting ETH. As noted above, the ETH has seen rather little public support or consideration from most mainstream e ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Extraterrestrial hypothesis - Arguments Against and For

Extraterrestrial hypothesis - Against. The most frequent argument against the ETH is that there is simply little to no evidence or data which supports such a far-reaching hypothesis. It's also argued that the vast distances between stars and planets would make interstellar travel so unlikely as to be practically impossible. Astronomer Carl Sagan offered a detailed argument against the ETH along these lines. See also Fermi Paradox. Though at one point Dr Jacques Vallee favored the ETH, he has since rejected ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Fort Beauséjour - Construction of Fort Lawrence

In 1750, a British Army expeditionary force under Major Charles Lawrence arrived at Beaubassin. The village was ordered burnt by a local French priest to ensure that the British could not profit from its seizure, however the British forces soon found they were outnumbered by Acadians and Mi'kmaq. Lawrence's troops retreated but returned in September 1750 in greater numbers and began construction of a palisade fort on a ridge immediately east of the Missaguash River, believed to be the historic dividing line between Acadia and Nova Scotia since the Treaty of Utrecht was signed. The work on the f ...

To prevent further Iban migration upriver in the Rejang river basin, which was creating conflicts with the Orang Ulu, Rajah Charles Brooke built Baleh Fort at Nanga Balleh, the confluence of the Rejang and Baleh rivers between Kanowit and Song in late 1874. Rajah Charles Brooke nearly drowned here in 1877 when his boat capsized in the dangerous currents. He abandoned the fort in 1878, and replaced it with a new fort located lower down the river in 1880. The new Kapit Fort was built entirely of ‘belian’ (ironwood) timber w ...

Fort Lee is named as a result of George Washington and named after General Charles Lee, who camped in this area, defending New York City. George Washington and his troops actually walked on a road which is called Main Street in Fort Lee. In fact, it was during Washington's retreat from Fort Lee in November 1776 that Thomas Paine composed his pamphlet, "The American Crisis", which began with the recognized phrase, "These are the times that try men's souls". The George Washington Bridge, which connects New Jersey to uptown Manhattan, New York City ...

Charles Fort: Encyclopedia II - Kanowit - Fort Emma

Fort Emma is a fort built in 1859 by Rajah James Brooke, out of timber and bamboo. It was named after Emma Brooke, sister of Rajah Charles Brooke. The fort remains impressive, despite years of neglect. It is currently closed to the public. Fort Emma was also the site of the last serious challenge to Brooke rule in Sarawak. In 1859, a number of Malay chiefs, led by Sharif Masahor of Mukah and supported by the Sultan of Brunei planned a series of attacks to kill all the Europeans in Sarawak and Dutch Borneo. In June 1859, Brooke ...
