What is a "Jyotish" or "Ayurvedic Quality" Gemstone?
Jyotish is the sanskrit name for vedic astrology, meaning "science of light". Ayurveda is the Indian system of medicine meaning "science of life". For gems to be capable of transmitting cosmic planetary rays that may enhance physical, emotional, or spiritual health or attract positive influences toward a person, they must first of all be natural. This means they are created by tectonic pressure within the earth over time periods up to millions of years. Gems also transmit cosmic colors that are in turn absorbed by the chakra centers in the ethereal body and therefore they must be of good quality in clarity.

Its apparent principle is that different metals and gemstones affect the body's electromagnetic field differently. For example, emeralds, can balance chakras and can heal and cleanse one's aura. Obsidian can eliminate negativity and draw one's aura toward the body.

Choosing and Wearing Gemstones
Once a proper stone is obtained it may be set in either a ring or pendant for wearing on the body. The gem must be set in such a way that the stone comes into contact with the skin. Gems should be set by themselves, as certain gems are incompatible and may cause undesired effects if set together in the same piece of jewelry. There are exceptions in the case of specific talismans where certain gems are set together for a positive combined effect.

Gemstone Therapy
From time immemorial gemstones have been used by all cultures of the world. Their inherent beauty is second to no other material in the mineral kingdom. Today's science of gemmology gives much information about the physical properties and chemical composition of gemstones, but gives no information of their "healing properties". They are extremely powerful tools to aid in balancing the physical, psychological and spiritual sides of life. This is necessary in order to keep oneself in proper order. The information I will give in this section is mainly from the Vedic viewpoint. This has been tried and tested for thousands of years and found to be accurate. The vedas have the greatest wealth of information on the metaphysical properties, as well as the physical properties, of gems and their correct application to enhance the lives of human beings.
