Centurion tank: Encyclopedia - Centurion tank

The Centurion was the primary British Main Battle Tank of the immediate post-war era, and considered by many to be one of the best British tank designs of all time. Designed during the Second World War it served in Europe, but arrived just too late for combat. It went on to provide excellent service during the Korean War where it outperformed both US and Soviet designs by a wide margin. It would go on to be one of the most widely used tank designs, equipping armies around the world, with small numbers still in service until the 1990s. ...

In 1943, the Department of Tank Design was asked to produce a new design for a heavy cruiser tank that under the designation A41. After a series of fairly marginal designs in the A series in the past, and after facing the dreaded German 88 mm gun, the War Office asked for a major overhaul, demanding increased durability, reliability, a maximum weight of 40 tons, and the ability to withstand a dir ...

Centurion tank: Encyclopedia - Tank

A tank is a tracked armoured fighting vehicle, designed primarily to engage enemy forces by the use of direct fire. A modern main battle tank is distinguished by its high level of firepower, mobility and armour protection relative to other vehicles of its era. It can cross comparatively rough terrain at high speeds, but requires extensive fuel, maintenance, and ammunition and thus is logistically demanding. It has the heaviest armour of any vehicle on the battlefield, and carries powerful weaponry, often at least manifested in the pre ...

Leyland Motors Ltd - Beginning. Leyland has a long history dating from 1896, when the Sumner and Spurrier families founded the Lancashire Steam Motor Company in the town of Leyland in North West England. The company's first vehicle was a 1.5-ton-capacity steam van. The Lancashire Steam Motor Company was renamed Leyland Motors in 1907 when they took over Coulthards of Preston. They also built a second factory in the neighbour ...

Centurion tank: Encyclopedia II - BARV - Sherman BARV

The original BARV was a Sherman M4A2 tank which had been waterproofed and had the turret replaced by a tall armoured superstructure. The Sherman M4A2 model was chosen as a basis for the BARV as it was thought that the all welded hull would be easier to waterproof and as it was powered by a diesel engine which would be less affected by the sudden temperature changes caused by the tank repeatedly plunging into cold water. Around 50 were deployed on the invasion beaches during the Battle of Normandy. Able to operating in 9 foot (2.7 metr ...

Tank - World War One: the first tanks. Having already seen Rolls Royce armoured cars used by Royal Naval Air Service in 1914, and aware of schemes to create a tracked fighting vehicle, First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill sponsored the Landships Committee to oversee development of this new weapon. The first successful prototype tank, nicknamed Little Willie, was tested for the British Army on September 6, 1915. Although initially termed landships by the Admiralty, the initial vehicles were colloqu ...

Israel Defense Forces - Service and manpower. National military service is compulsory for Jewish men and women over the age of 17, although exemptions may be made on religious, physical, pacifist or psychological grounds (see Profile 21). Centurion tank: Encyclopedia II - GC-45 howitzer - Design History

The general design follows several decades of work by Bull with fin-stabilized artillery shells, starting at CARDE and later at Project HARP. In these projects accuracy was not a huge concern, the objective was muzzle velocity, and the test articles were finned darts representing missiles. Yet with the removal of the rifling and the soft-metal driving band on the shell itself, the shell could be designed purely for ballistics, as opposed to having the external constraint of the driving band being located near the balance point of the shell. A system combining some sort of rifling for accuracy without a driving ...

Centurion tank: Encyclopedia II - DD tank - Combat

The main use of DD tanks occurred on D-Day. Limited numbers were also used during Operation Plunder, the British crossing of the Rhine on March 23, 1945. The DD Sherman was used to equip ten tank battalions of British, Canadian and American forces for the D-Day landings. Tank landing craft or LCTs, each carrying four tanks, would launch the DDs from around two miles offshore. They would swim to the beaches and overpower German defences unprepared to attack tanks. In the event, the tank's record was a mixture of success and failure although they are mainly remembered for their ...

Centurion tank: Encyclopedia II - High explosive squash head - History

HESH was developed by (Charles) Dennis Burney in the 1940s for the British war effort, originally as an anti-fortification "wallbuster" munition for use against concrete. This also led to British developments in recoilless rifles as a means to deliver the shell. HESH was found to be surprisingly effective against metallic armour as well, although the British had effective weapons using HEAT, such as the PIAT. HESH was used for some time as a competitor to the more common HEAT round, again in combination with recoiless rifles as infant ...

Centurion tank: Encyclopedia II - Tank - Sonic, seismic, and thermal traces

Stationary tanks can be well camouflaged in woodland and forested areas where there is natural cover, making detection and attack from the air more difficult. By contrast, in the open it is very hard to hide a tank. In both cases, however, once a tank starts its engine or begins to move it can be detected much more easily due to the heat and noise generated by its engine. The tank tracks across lands can be spotted from the air, and in the desert movement can st ...

Centurion tank: Encyclopedia II - Tank - Command, control, and communications

Commanding and co-ordinating a tank organisation in the field has always been subject to particular problems. Because of the isolation of small units, individual vehicles, and even the crewmen of a tank, special arrangements have had to be made. Armoured bulkheads, engine noise, intervening terrain, dust, and smoke, and the need to operate "hatches down" (or "buttoned up") comprise severe detriments to communications. Every action of a tank's crew, movement and fire, is ordered by its commander. In some early tanks, the crew commander ...
