Dreyer was born an illegitimate child in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was soon orphaned. His adoptive parents were strict Lutherans, and their teachings were to influence the themes of many of his films. As a young man, Dreyer worked as a journalist, eventually finding his way into jobs writing title cards for silent films and then writing screenplays. His first forays into directing were met with limited success, and he eventually le ...

Carl Theodor Dreyer: Encyclopedia II - The Passion of Joan of Arc - Story and style

The film comprises five gruelling cross-examinations and the resultant burning of Joan at the stake. What especially stood out at the time Passion was made was the film's camera-work and emphasis on the actors' facial features. Dreyer shot a great deal of the film in close-up and forbade his actors to wear any makeup, the better to tell the story through their expressions. Falconetti — in her only movie role — was commended for her multifaceted performance as Joan. Passion was originally intended to use the new technology of sound, but Dreye ...

Carl Theodor Dreyer: Encyclopedia II - Symbolism arts - Symbolism as a movement

Symbolism arts - The Symbolist Manifesto. Symbolists believed that art should aim to capture more absolute truths which could only be accessed by indirect methods. Thus, they wrote in a highly metaphorical and suggestive manner, endowing particular images or objects with symbolic meaning. The Symbolist manifesto (‘Le Symbolisme’, Le Figaro, 18 Sept 1886) was published in 1886 by Jean Moréas. Moréas announced that Symbolism was hostile to "plain meanings, declamations, false sentimentality and matter-of-fact ...

Carl Theodor Dreyer: Encyclopedia II - Ray Carney - Rowlands's response

Gena Rowlands has stated that no such film ever existed. She does believe, however, that as Cassavetes's widow, and the owner of several of her husband's films, including the released Shadows, she has legal ownership of any work-in-progress. And so, she has started a number of legal proceedings to confiscate the film from Carney and destroy it. Carney cites U. S. copyright law, which states that a work in progress or an alternate version of a work is not protected by the same copyright as the finished product, and so is in the public ...

Carl Theodor Dreyer: Encyclopedia II - Antonin Artaud - Biographical Information

Antoine Marie Joseph Artaud was born in Marseille on September 4th, 1896. He died in Paris in 1948. Antonin is a diminutive form of Antoine (little Anthony), and was among a long list of names which Artaud went by throughout his life. Although his mother had many children, only Antoine, his brother and his sister survived infancy. At the age of four, Antonin had a severe attack of meningitis. The virus gave Antonin a nervous, irritable temperament throughout adolescence. He also suffered from neuralgia, stammering and severe bouts of depress ...

Carl Theodor Dreyer: Encyclopedia II - Ray Carney - Alternate Cassavetes works

Carney has discovered alternate versions of Cassavetes's seminal works, Faces and Shadows. The longer version of Faces he discovered is stored at the Library of Congress, but has been suppressed by Gena Rowlands, the widow of Cassavetes and executor of his estate. [3] The alternate Shadows, also known as Shadows I or the Ur-Shadows, was created two years before the 1959 version. It was largely improvised, critically touted at the time of its screening but it confused most of the public in atte ...

Carl Theodor Dreyer: Encyclopedia II - Ray Carney - Popular culture kitsch and symbolism

Carney is highly critical of much mainstream art, and the way it is approached from an academic standpoint. He is well-known, and in some circles reviled, for the stridency with which he attacks artists as diverse as Steven Spielberg, Brian De Palma, The Coen Brothers, and Quentin Tarantino, whom he perceives as tricksters, using empty style to score points with the "in" crowd. (And, should they try to do something more ambitious, they are still demonized; for example, he often refers to Spielberg's output after Schin ...

Carney was educated at Harvard (magna cum laude) and Rutgers. Professor Carney taught literature at Middlebury College and Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin. He was also a William Rice Kimball Fellow at Stanford, working on a study of performance art, particularly stand up comedy.[2] He met Cassavetes during the last years of the director's life, and was the first American scholar to write books on the director. ...

Carl Theodor Dreyer: Encyclopedia II - Silent film - Projection speed

Up until around 1925, most silent films were shot at slower speeds (or "frame rates") than sound films, typically at 16 to 23 frames per second depending on the year and studio, rather than 24 frames per second. Unless carefully shown at their original speeds they can appear unnaturally fast and jerky, which reinforces their alien appearance to modern viewers. At the same time, some scenes were intentionally undercranked during shooting in order to accelerate the action, particularly in the case of slapstick comedies. The intended frame rate ...
