 | | | Carl Peter Thunberg: Encyclopedia II - Jönköping - HistoryJönköping is a old trading center (Köping), since it was located on a crossroad for the roads following along the rivers Nissan and Lagan, and the road between the provinces Ostrogothia and Westrogothia. | | | Carl Peter Thunberg: Encyclopedia II - Dejima - Sakoku policyFor the next two hundred years, Dutch merchants were generally not allowed to cross from Deshima to Nagasaki, and Japanese were likewise banned from entering Deshima, except for prostitutes. (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) at Dejima, a small artificial island (120 m by 75 m) in the Bay of Nagasaki, connected to the city by a landfill. He was appointed head surgeon (1775-1776) of this trading-post. But, like the Dutch, he was hardly allowed to leave the island.
