CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - Ares Shrike 5.56 - Overview

The Shrike 5.56 is not a weapon by itself. It is an upper receiver that, when combined with a M16/M4 lower receiver, becomes a belt-fed or magazine-fed squad automatic weapon similar to the FN M249. Like the M249, the Shrike 5.56 features a quick-change barrel designed to prevent overheating. It is therefore capable of the sustained rates of fire of existing LMGs, but is as light and compact as an assault rifle. Ares claims the Shrike is th ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - M16 rifle - Design

The M16 is made of aluminum alloy and plastics, except for the steel barrel and parts of the action. Early models were especially lightweight at 3.2 kg (7.5 lb), about 30% less than older 7.62 mm "battle rifles" of the 1950s and 1960s. It also compares very favourably with the 5 kg (loaded) AK47. New models weigh more (8.5 lb or 3.9 kg) because of the "heavy" barrel used to increase accuracy. The rifle is 40 inches (1.02 m) long with standard 20 inch (508 mm) barrel. Stoner experimented with titanium barrels for even greater weight savings, but failed to ach ...

Standard issue magazines are 20 or 30 round double stack magazines; drum magazines in 90 and 100 round capacities also exist. Low-capacity magazines are available to comply with some areas' legal restrictions or for hunting. Aftermarket "uppers" that incorporate barrels of different weights, lengths, and can handle different caliber ammo abound for this rifle. They are very easily installed, due to the rifle's modular design. Prices tend to be reasonable. ...

The M16 is the most commonly manufactured 5.56 x 45 mm rifle in the world. Currently, the M16/M4 system is in use by 15 NATO countries and more than 80 countries world wide. Together, the U.S., Canada (as the C7), Singapore, and China have produced more than 8,000,000 units with approximately 90% still in operation [1]. In U.S. service, the M16 primarily replaced the M14 and M1 Carbine series as standard infantry rifles, and to a lesser extent, some of the jobs of the BAR Light automatic rifle. The M14 would go on to see service as a ...

Colt's first two models produced after the aquisition of the rifle from Armalite were the 601 and 602, and these rifles were in many ways clones of the original Armalite rifle (in fact, these rifles were often found stamped Colt Armalite AR-15). The 601 and 602 are easily identified by their "slabside" lower recievers without the commonly found "fencing" around the magazine well, and in certain cases their green or brown furniture. CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - Submachine gun - Modern

Following World War II, the role of submachine guns was greatly diminished with the introduction of modern compact assault rifles, such as the CAR-15 and Heckler & Koch HK 53. Submachine guns are still used by special forces, air crews, armored vehicle crews, counter-terrorist units, and Naval personnel. Submachine guns lend themselves to moderation with suppressors, particularly so in cases where the weapon is loaded with subsonic ammunition. The Sten and modern-day Heckler & Koch MP5 have all been manufactured with quiet, integral silencers, and such weapons are favou ...

The C8 carbine is the carbine member of the C7 family, and in outwards appearance very similar to the Colt 653. Colt made the initial C8s for Canadian Forces as the Colt Model 725. Historically Australia has had relatively low levels of violent crime. Overall levels of homicide and suicide have remained relatively static for several decades, while the proportion of these crimes that involved firearms has consistently declined since the early 1980s. For example, between 1991 and 2001, the number of firearm related deaths in Australia has declined 47% [1]. The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia argues that there is no eviden ...

These weapons also had 10 in (254 mm) barrels and were originally fitted with the 3.5 in (89 mm) moderators designed for the 607. A 4.5 ...

One of the largest end users of Colt 653s was Israel, who imported a large number just in time for the Yom Kippur War. These weapons have had their stock tubes modified to allow for six positions instead of the original 2 or 4, and have A2 style pistol grips, as well as, M4 profile barrels. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are currently phasing these out in favor true M4/A1 carbines. Elisco Tools in the Philippines also acquired a license to produce the ...
