CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - CAR-15 - The Family

CAR-15 - CAR-15 Rifle. By the time the idea of the CAR-15 family was developed, Colt had already been producing two rifle variants for the US military. Colt's CAR-15 family included two rifles, one with the forward assist function (Model 603) and one without (Model 604). Both of these weapons were purchased by the US military, and more information can be found on the M16 page. See also:

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - M4 Carbine - History and variants

Except for the very first delivery order, all U.S. military issue M4 and M4A1 possess a flat-top NATO M1913-specification rail on top of the receiver (for attachment of optical sights and other aiming devices — Trijicon TA11 and TA31 ACOGs and Aimpoint M68 CCOs being the favorite choices), and a detachable rail-mounted carrying handle. The current government standards are the Colt Model 920 (M4) and 921 (M4A1). The major difference between these models is that the M4 has the "S-1-3" (safe/semi-automatic/3-round burst) fire modes, while the M4A1 has a "S-1-F ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - IMI Galil - History

The Galil project began after the Six-Day War, and the design was selected by the IDF from two competing designs. The winner was based on the Finnish Rk 62 (a variant of the AK-47). The first rifles began to arrive in 1974, after the Yom Kippur War. The Galil was designed to be a domestically produced main battle rifle for the IDF, taking the best features of other rifles, such as the M16 and AK-47, and putting them into one rifle. That rifle could be adapted to any number of tasks. The result was the IMI Galil. The Galil was used by the infantry during the Lebanon War in 1982; but towards the mid-1980s, it wa ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - M4 Carbine - Design

The M4/M4A1 5.56 mm Carbine is a gas-operated, air-cooled, magazine fed, selective fire, shoulder-fired weapon with a collapsible stock. A shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle with a 36 cm barrel, the M4A1 provides the individual soldier operating in close quarters the capability to engage targets at extended range with accurate, lethal fire. The original M4 Carbine had semi-automatic and three-round burst fire modes, while the M4A1 has "semi" and "auto" with no three-round burst. The M4A1 Carbine achieves over 80% commonality with the M16A2 ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - M4 Carbine - American civilian ownership

Sales of M4 by Colt are restricted to military and law enforcement. Only under special circumstances can a civilian own an M4 Carbine. The 14.5-inch barrel would classify the weapon as a "Short-Barreled Rifle" according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATF). The rate of fire (even for burst-firing models) would classify it as a machine gun. While many machine guns can be legally owned with a proper tax stamp from the BATF, the Gun Owner's Protection Act of 1986 barred the transfer to civilians of machine g ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - IMI Galil - Variants

Nowdays, there are a number of models used: Galil ARM - the main version. Galil SAR ("short") - no bipod or carry handle, shorter barrel. Galil MAR ("micro") - which retains the internal features with a completely new frame and even shorter barrel. It has been reported that this weapon is subject to severe overheating, becoming too hot to touch after sustained automatic fire. A redesigned version is now in service with Israeli special forces in undercover operations, small enough to conceal under a jacket, yet extremely powerful. A Galil MAR variant with a redesigned receiver and front sight is in widesprea ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - IMI Galil - Usage

The Galil's main problem is weight; it is heavier than the M16A1, at around 3.9 kg (8.6 lb) empty vs the M16A1's 2.9 kg (6.4 lb), and therefore often considered to be a greater burden as a personal weapon for infantrymen, although its short length due to the folding stock made it very popular with the troops (Galil 840/614 mm vs M16A1 986 mm). The weapon never caught on among Israel's numerous special forces units, who used AK-47's both for reliability, and because of the Galil's cumbersome weight. Fighting infantry units therefore were reis ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - Colt Commando - Early models & naming

The original "Commando" was created when Colt began developing the AR-15 pattern, newly acquired from Armalite. The need for a shorter handier weapon had been expressed by a number of forces engaged in the expanding conflict in South East Asia in the mid 1960s, and Colt responded with an ultra-short variant as part of its new CAR-15 family, the Model 607 CAR-15 Commando Model Submachine Gun. Note that calling it a submachine gun was a new trend in sub-machine gun naming, as previous SMGs were all chambered for pistol, rather than rifle ammun ...

CAR-15: Encyclopedia II - Gun politics in Australia - History

Gun politics in Australia - Settlement to 1980s. Australia has a long history of legitimate firearms use, predominantly for the purposes of agriculture, recreational hunting and pest control. During the early years of the settlement at Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land (now Hobart, Tasmania) the British colonists were heavily reliant on a diet of kangaroo and wallaby meat for survival. Convicts assigned as servants to free settlers were often issued firearms for hunting purposes. However, the British colonist ...

Today the AR-15 and its variations are manufactured by many companies and have captured the affection of sport shooters and police forces around the world due to their low cost, accuracy, and modularity.
