Canadian Forces Maritime Command: Encyclopedia II - Kingston class patrol vessel - Design

The Kingston Class patrol vessels have many admirable qualities, including crew comfort and ship manoeuvrability, but they represent some design compromises. The program was conceived to advanced the use of commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment and construction techniques in a ship designed to military specifications. While the Z-drive thrusters make the Kingston class vessels extremely manoeuvrable (able to turn within their own shiplengths) and the engines are quite powerful and fuel-efficient, the hull shape with ...

Based on average vessel speeds, the harbour is strategically located one hour north of the Great Circle Route between the Eastern Seaboard and Europe and is the first inbound and last outbound port of call in North America. The harbour is largely formed by a drowned river valley which succumbed to sea level rise since glaciation. The Sackville River now empties into the upper end of the harbour in Bedford Basin, however its original river bed has been charted by the Canadian Hydrographic S ...

All CCG vessels are painted uniformly regardless of their use. They are characterized by a red hull and white superstructure, designed to look like a "floating Canadian flag". The hull bears a 75-degree white stripe, similar to the markings on USCG vessels. Ship nameplates are typically affixed to the superstructure and vessels are typically named for persons or ...

Canadian Forces Maritime Command: Encyclopedia II - Royal Canadian Navy - Ensigns and jacks

On March 3, 1911, the RCN was authorized the use of the White Ensign, which remained the main identifying flag of the navy for the next 54 years. At the same time, the Canadian Blue Ensign was designated the jack of the RCN. However, because naval tradition dictates that the jack is worn at the ship's bow only when docked or on "dress ship" occasions, HMC ships normally had no distinctly Canadian flags when under way, the White Ensign being identical to the Royal Navy's ensign. Because of this, a tradition developed of painting a green m ...

Canadian Forces Maritime Command: Encyclopedia II - Halifax Harbour - Navigation

Halifax's official harbour limit for navigational purposes is delineated by a line running from Herring Cove on the west side of the main channel, to the northern end of McNabs Island, then from McNabs Island across the Eastern Passage to the actual community of Eastern Passage on the east side of the island. Deep draught vessels must use the main channel into the harbour, which runs on the west side of McNabs Island. The west entrance point marking the beginning of the inner approach to the harbour using this channel is located near Chebucto Head, a ...
