Canaan: Encyclopedia II - Jacob - Jacob described in the Hebrew Bible

Jacob was born 20 years after Isaac and Rebekah were married, at which time his father was 60 (Gen. 25:26), and Abraham, 160 years old. He and his twin brother, Esau, were markedly different in appearance and behavior. Esau was a ruddy hunter, while Jacob was a gentle man who "dwelled in tents," interpreted by most biblical scholars as a mark of his studiousness in the "tents" of Torah. During Rebekah's pregnancy, "the children struggled together within her" (Genesis 25:22). According to Rashi, whenever Rebekah passed a house of learn ...

Canaan: Encyclopedia II - Curse of Ham - Interpretations of the curse of Ham

Curse of Ham - Modern interpretations. Some believe that the curse of Ham is an early Hebrew rationalization for Israel's conquest and enslavement of the Canaanites, who were presumed to descend from Canaan. Others think that the curse of Ham actually came from Ham having a sexual relationship with Noah's wife. When it says that Ham saw his father's nakedness, he had lain with Noah's wife and produced Canaan as their offspring, which is why Noah cursed Canaan. Similar wording is used in Lev. 20:10: "The man that ...

In this period the Hittites are mentioned as the ethnic label of two military commanders under king David (around 1000 BC), Ahimelech and Uriah; the latter is murdered by David for the sake of his wife Bathsheba. In Solomon's reign (around 950 BC), the Hittites are listed as people whom the Hebrew had not been able "utterly to destroy" in their conquest of Canaan and who paid tribute to Israel. The kings of the Hittites are mentioned (in two smilar passages), together with Egypt and the kings of Syria, as senders of lavish tribute to ...

Canaan: Encyclopedia II - Hittites in the Bible - Babylonian exile and return

In Ezekiel:16:1, Jerusalem is said to be the daughter of an Hittite mother and an Amorite father, sister of Samaria and Sodom. The intent is clearly offensive, but it is not clear whether the reference to the Hitittes is concrete or only symbolic. However, a century later, Ezra is dismayed to learn, on his arrival from Babylon, that the leaders who had remained on the land had been "polluted" by mixing with other people, including the Hittites. Hittites in the Bible - Ezekiel. Ezekiel:16:1: Ag ...

Canaan: Encyclopedia II - Hittites in the Bible - From Abraham to Egypt

In this period, which is conjectured to start sometime after 2000 BC and end sometime before 1200 BC, the "sons of Heth" or "children of Heth" (בני-חת, BNY-HT) and the label "Hittite" (HTY) are mentioned multiple times, but referring to essentially only two events. In Genesis:23:2, towards the end of Abraham's life, he was staying in Hebron, on lands belonging to the "children of Heth", and from them he obtained a plot of land with a cave to bury his wife Sarah. One of them (Ephron) is labeled "the Hittite", several times. This deal is mentioned three more times (with almost ...

Canaan: Encyclopedia II - Hamitic - Earlier uses of the term

Early interpretations of the Bible led many Western scholars to believe that all of humanity was descended from Noah. Chapters 9 and 10 of the Book of Genesis deal with the branching off and splitting up of Noah's sons into the world, this is open to interpretation, but the name of Cush, Ham's eldest son, means 'black' in Hebrew. Noah curses Ham and Canaan, Cush's brother, saying that he and his descendants would be a "servant of servants". Hebrew scholars used this passage to justify the Israelite subjugation of Canaan. These scholars, working around the 6th century AD, introduced the ...

Canaan: Encyclopedia II - Natib Qadish - History

For detailed notes regarding the history of Canaan, please see Canaan, Ugarit, Ebla, Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos. The Phoenicians are one of the daughter cultures of Canaan, and Carthage was a daughter-colony of the Phoenicians. Some modern practitioners blend Phoenician religion into their Canaanite religious practices. The Hebrew people are probably also descended from the Canaanites, and the early polytheistic roots of the Hebrew religion demonstrate a close tie to the ancient Canaanites. However, it should be noted that Natib Qadish, ...
