California Aqueduct: Encyclopedia - Water transportation

Water transportation is the intentional movement of water over large distances. Methods of transportation fall into three categories: Aqueducts, which include pipelines, canals, and tunnels; container shipment, which includes transport by truck and tanker; and towing, where a tugboat is used to pull an iceberg or a large water bag along behind it. Due to its weight, the transportation of water is very energy intensive. Unless it has the assistance of gravity, a canal or long-distance pipeline will need pumping stations at regular intervals. In this regard, the lower friction levels of the canal make it ...

California Aqueduct: Encyclopedia II - Alfalfa - Culture

Alfalfa can be sown spring or fall, and does best on well-drained soils with a neutral pH of 6.8-7.5. Alfalfa requires a great deal of potash; soils low in fertility should be fertilized with manure or a chemical fertilizer. Usually a seeding rate of 13 - 17 kg/hectare (12 - 15 lb/acre) in climatic acceptable regions and a rate of 22 kg/hectare (20 lb/acre) in southern regions is used. A nurse crop is often used, particularly for spring plantings, to reduce weed problems. Her ...

California Aqueduct: Encyclopedia II - Antelope Valley Freeway - History

The high viaduct connecting the Antelope Valley Freeway with the Golden State Freeway was nearly complete when the February 9, 1971 Sylmar earthquake completely destroyed its interchange with the Golden State Freeway and wrecked large portions of its route through the San Gabriels. Rebuilt to stronger specifications, it again collapsed during the 1994 Northridge earthquake and was closed, but reopened within a year. Rapid exurban growth in Santa Clarita, Lancaster, and Palmdale has made the Antelope Valley Freeway one of the most cong ...

History of California - Russian exploration. In the early 1800s, fur trappers of the Russian Empire, which had already claimed Alaska, briefly explored the coast and set up trading posts as far south as Fort Ross in modern-day Sonoma County. They hunted for sea otter pelts as far south as the Channel Islands (across from modern Santa Barbara). A prominent marriage between a leading Californio family and an Imperial noble almost caused Russian trade to advance into Southern California. The scion from Russia, howev ...

California Aqueduct: Encyclopedia II - History of California - Prehistory

The coast of California was an inviting pathway even for the earliest inhabitants of North America. The remains of Arlington Springs Woman on Santa Rosa Island are among the traces of a very early inhabitation, dated to the last ice age (Wisconsin glaciation) about 13,000 years ago. When the first European explorers and settlers appeared, they found many Native American tribes living in the pristine land of oak woodlands, grassy hills, and broad beaches — in what is now California. Among the tribes were the Chumash, Maidu< ...

California Aqueduct: Encyclopedia II - Alfalfa - Harvesting

When alfalfa is to be used as hay, it is usually cut and baled. Loose haystacks are still used in some areas, but bales are much easier to transport. Ideally, the hay is cut just as the field is beginning to flower. When using farm equipment rather than hand-harvesting, the process begins with a swather, which cuts the alfalfa and arranges it in windrows. After it has dried, a tractor pulling a baler collects the hay into bales. There are three types of bales commonly used for alfalfa. Small "square" bales--actually rectilinear, and typicall ...
