Figures vary on how many were killed during the hysteria, estimates range anywhere from 50,000 to as many as nine million. Most were women and children, only a small fraction were actually witches. Craft Witchcraft Dictionary on BURNING TIMES
BURNING TIMES- Refers to the times from the Spanish Inquisiton through the last outburst of persecution and witch killings in the mid nineteenth century. This was the period of history called the 'Middle Ages", when an arguable number of persons were put to death, suposedly for witchcraft. Burning was hardly the only manner of death, & witchcraft hardly the only reason. The Christian Church, during this time stamped out religious practices they didn't understand, & added a great deal of wealth to their coffers; as did landowners greedy of their neighbors. A term used by some Witches for the period of persecution in the Middle Ages and later. It is in fact a misnomer in some places, as Witches were only burned in Scotland, and on the continent of Europe. In England and the U.S., they were hanged.Although the murderous persecutions began as early as the twelfth century. The last known capital sentance for witchcraft in the West took place in Scotland in the early 1800s. Figures vary on how many were killed during this hysteria, estimates range anywhere from fifty thousand to as many as nine million.

 | | | Burning Times: Encyclopedia II - Witch-hunt - The Burning Times"The Burning Times" is an English term referring to the time of the Great European Witchhunts (1450-1750). Its first recorded use is by Gerald Gardner in the 1950s and was probably created by him according to Ronald Hutton (344). Gardner used the phrase in reference to his claim that Wicca was an ancient persecuted religion, relying in turn heavily on the work of Margaret Murray. Gardner believed Wiccans should remember their forebears who were burned by the Church. In fact, witches in England were never burnt, but were hanged; burning of he ...

 | | | Burning Times: Why Wicca is Not Celtic PaganismWhy Wicca is Not Celtic Paganism
There are many out there who believe that Wicca and
its related forms of NeoPagism are a type of Celtic Paganism (and vice
versa), but this is simply not
true. The following article is meant to be a comparison of Wicca and Celtic
Paganism in order to demonstrate this, and to educate the public about Celtic
Paganism. While Wicca certainly contains elements of Celtic mythology, folk
magic and religious belief, its basic tenets and beliefs are radically
different from those of Celtic Pagans.

 | | | Burning Times: Encyclopedia II - Witch-hunt - SociologySociology has attributed the occurrence of witchhunts to the human necessity to blame problems on someone. For example, Europe during the periods in which witchhunts prevail relied upon agriculture; if this failed one year, the consequences would very likely be disastrous. Crop failures often correlated with the occurrence of witchhunts, leading sociologists to state that communities often took out their anger of a lack of food on supposed 'witches'. This can be paralleled in more recent examples such as the Nazi use of anti-semitism to appo ...

 | | | Burning Times: Do-it-Yourself Tips For Meditation
Meditation is a good stress-reliever. It calms the senses, making the mind inactive and the body, passive. Meditation usually involves concentrating on an object - a flower, a burning candle, a circle, a sound or word, or even one’s own rhythm of breath. Over time, random thoughts peter off. Meditation could also be objectless - just sitting, doing nothing. Most forms of meditation involve turning your attention inward, away from your usual preoccupations and activities. In the process, you make a simple but significant shift from thinking and doing, to just being. With repeated practice the mind begins to settle down and your breathing slows, and you get into a relaxed, peaceful, harmonious state.
