| | | | Burning Times: Paganism Pagan Dictionary on BURNING TIMES BURNING TIMES: Reference to a historical time from around 1000 C.E. through the 17th century when it is said that up to nine million people were tortured and burned by church and public officials on the assumption that they were the Christian version of Witches. This turned into an extremely profitable venture, as all land and property was seized from the accused individual and portions given to the accuser (in reward fashion) and the remainder seized by the church officials. Historians indicate that the majority of people tortured and murdered were women and children. (See also: BURNING TIMES, Paganism, Pagan, Pagan Dictionary)

New Age
Spirituality Dictionary on Burning Times Burning Times This is a term used to describe the period from the Middle Ages onwards in which witches were persecuted and burned at the stake, although, most executions were in fact by hanging, not burning. The last known capital sentence for witchcraft in the West took place in Scotland in the early 1800Õs. Figures vary on how many were killed during the hysteria, estimates range anywhere from 50,000 to as many as nine million. Most were women and children, only a small fraction were actually witches. Most were heretics or Christians accused of witchcraft by those who disliked them (See also: Burning Times, New Age Spirituality, Body Mind and Soul)
