Bulgarian: Encyclopedia II - Kató Lomb - Her language learning method and principles

Her keyword was most of all interest: the word, coming from Latin interesse, has a double meaning, referring to the material profit or the mental attraction, together: motivation. This means that I can answer these questions: "How much am I interested in it? What do I want with it? What does it mean for me? What good is it for me?" She didn't believe in the so-called language talent. She tended to express the language skill with a fraction, with motivation in the numerator (through which we can pinch off some ten minutes ...

Wladyslaw was the firstborn son of Wladislaus II Jagiełło of Poland and Zofia Holszańska. In spite of that, the young ruler and his ambitious mother were aware that there was opposition to them. Bulgarian: Encyclopedia II - Ladino language - Orthography

Today, Ladino is most commonly written with the Latin alphabet, especially in Turkey. However, it is still sometimes written in the Hebrew alphabet (especially in Rashi characters), a practice that was very common, possibly almost universal, until the 19th Century (and called aljamiado, by analogy with Arabic usage.) Although the Greek and Cyrillic alphabets have been employed in the past, this is rare nowadays. Following the decimation of Sephardic communities throughout much of Europe (particularly in the Netherlands and the ...

Bulgarian: Encyclopedia II - Linguistic issues concerning the euro - Dutch

In Dutch, measure words (units) are generally used in singular form only. So when dealing with amounts one says 5 euro, just as it used to be 11 gulden (the plural of gulden is guldens) or 200 frank. Compare this to 2 meter, 3 uur (hour), 4 gram. The plural of euro is euro's but this is only used to refer to separate coins of one euro, not to abstract amounts of money. The Dutch also tend to make fun of the euro (perhaps to express some frustration over losing the guilder) by using the plural form euri (or euri's) ...

Bulgarian: Encyclopedia II - Klezmer - History

The Bible has several descriptions of orchestras and Levites making music. But after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70, many Rabbis discouraged musical instruments. But the importance of merrymaking at weddings was not diminished, and musicians came forth to fill that niche, klezmorim. The first klezmer known by name was Yakobius ben Yakobius, a 150s player of the aulus in Samaria. The earliest written record of the klezmorim is in the 15th century. It should be noted that it is unlikely that they played music recognizable as Klezme ...

An ancient story claims the Blessed Virgin Mary was sailing accompanied by St John the Evangelist on her way from Joppa to Cyprus to visit Lazarus. When the ship was blown off course to then pagan Athos it was forced to drop anchor near the port of Klement, close to the present monastery of Iviron. Macedonian language - Macedonian view. According to the Macedonian view, now prevalent and official in the books in Republic of Macedonia, Macedonian was the first official language of the Slavs, thanks to the St. Cyril and St. Methodius's introduction of Slavic literacy language through the Glagolitic script, that was based on Southern Macedonian dialect from the neighbourhood of Thessaloniki (Solun), the home of the two saints. Later on, Macedonia fell under the reign of Bulgarians, and the Byzantines regarded ...

Bulgarian: Encyclopedia II - Makarov PM - History

The Makarov was the result of a competition held to design a replacement for the aging Tokarev TT-33 semi-automatic pistol. The TT had been loosely derived from the popular M1911 and was, by 1945, felt to be too large, heavy, and unreliable for a general service pistol. Rather than building his gun around an existing cartridge, Nikolai Makarov designed a new round, the 9 x 18 mm PM, based on the popular Browning 9 x 17 mm/.380 ACP cartridge. In the interests of simplicity and economy, the Makarov pistol was to be of straight blowback operati ...

Bulgarian: Encyclopedia II - Old Church Slavonic - Basis and local influences

Old Church Slavonic is evidenced by a relatively small body of manuscripts, written for the most part, in the late 10th and the early 11th century. The language has a Southern Slavic basis with an admixture of Western Slavic features inherited during the mission of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius to Great Moravia (863 - 885). The only well-preserved manuscript of Moravian recension, the Kiev Folia, is characterised by the replacement of some Southern Slavonic phonetical and lexical features with Western Slavic ones. Manuscripts written in the medieval Bulgari ...
