Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Bulat Okudzhava - Life

Bulat Okudzhava was born in Moscow on 9 May 1924 into a family of communists who had come from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, for study and work connected with the Communist Party. Son of a Georgian father and an Armenian mother, Bulat Okudzhava spoke and wrote only in Russian. This was because his mother, who spoke Georgian, Azeri, and of course Armenian, had always requested that everyone who came to visit her house "Please, speak the language of Lenin - Russian". His father, a high Communist Party member from Georgia, was arrested in 19 ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia - Bard Soviet Union

The term bard (барды) came to be used in the Soviet Union in the early 1960s (and continues to be used in Russia today) for popular poets and singers who wrote songs outside the Soviet establishment. Bard poetry differs from other poetry mainly in the fact that it is sung along with a simple guitar melody as opposed to being spoken. Another difference is that this form of poetry focuses less on style and more on meaning. This means that fewer stylistic devices are used, and the poetry often takes the form of narrative. What separ ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Russian rock - History

Russian rock - The early 60's. Prior to the late sixties, music in the Soviet Union was divided into two groups: music published by the Melodya, and everything else. Under this second group were the bards, underground folk singer-songwriters. Bards such as Vladimir Vysotsky and Bulat Okudzhava created the style that is referred to as "author's song" (avtorskaya pesnya), mostly played on unaccompanied acoustic guitar and characterized by a strong accent on lyrics that sometimes carried a subversive meaning. Their ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Music of Russia - Classical opera and ballet

Russia has a long history of classical music innovation. The first important Russian composer was Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857), who added religious and folk elements to classical compositions, composing pioneering operas like Ruslan and Lyudmila and A Life for the Tsar; though these operas were distinctively Russian, they were based on the Italian tradition. Glinka and the composers who made up The Mighty Handful after him (Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, Balakirev, Borodin and César Cui) were often influenced by Russian fol ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Bard Soviet Union - Types of songs

Bard Soviet Union - Tourist song. During the Brezhnev era of stagnation in the history of the Soviet Union, camping, especially its extreme forms such as alpinism, kayaking/canoeing, and canyoning, became a form of escapism for young people, who felt that these occupations were the only ways of life in which such values as courage, friendship, risk, trust, cooperation and mutual support still mattered. (Similar occurrences can be found in His ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union - History

After the October Revolution of 1917, some Scouts took the Bolsheviks' side, which would later lead to the establishment of ideologically-altered Scoutlike organizations, such as “ЮК” (Юные Коммунисты, or young communists; pronounced as yuk) and others. During the Russian Civil War from 1918 to 1920, most of the Scoutmasters and many Scouts fought in the ranks of the White Army and interventionists against the Red Army. Those Scouts who did not wish to accept the new Soviet system eit ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Boris Grebenshchikov - Worth noting

BG has virtually always been able to skillfully combine his interests into a cohesive, if highly eclectic, whole. His lyrics can feature Hinduism, Russian Orthodoxy, and drug use in the same quatrain and not make one blink an eye. The ability has only grown stronger over the years. 1999's "Psi" switches from detailed references to samurai culture to mentions of a certain carpenter's son to data storage on hard driv ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Yuri Vizbor - Music

Vizbor is often compared with his contemporaries Vladimir Vysotsky and Bulat Okudzhava. The topics of Vizbor's songs were observational, focusing on his love of nature and of travel. By using his extremely varied professions as a template, Vizbor attempted to document various aspects of "normal life" at the height of Brezhnev's period of stagnation. His trademark was a relaxed singing style that often sounded on the verge of laughter. Vizbor would record songs with a traditional Russian seven string guitar ...

Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union - Structure

Its main grouping of members until 1942 was the "Young Pioneer detachment," which then typically consisted of children belonging to the same secondary school. From 1942 to October 1990 (when the organization was broken up) the "detachment" was made up of children belonging to the same class within a school, while a school was refered to as a "Young Pioneer group." Vizbor's father was a commander in the Red Army of Lithuanian descent. His family name was originally Vizborus. His mother was an ethnic Russian from Krasnodar. Bulat Okudzhava: Encyclopedia II - Boris Grebenshchikov - Going West

Perestroika has ushered in a new era of opportunity for rock musicians; several of the more prominent ones got breaks in the West. BG's came from Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame). Stewart-produced "Radio Silence" was released in 1989, featuring covers of Alexander Vertinsky's "China" amid songs by BG, including a song written to Sir Thomas Malory's "Death of King Arthur". Annie Lennox and Chrissie Hynde helped o ...

BG's big break (or, in retrospect, his and the band's "watershed" moment), however, came in 1980, when Artem Troitzky (web site in Russian), the first public Russian rock critic and the enabling figure in many a Russian rock musician's carrier, invited Aquarium to perform at the Tbilisi Rock Festival. The festival was a state-sanctioned attempt to channel the then-burgeoning Russian rock music movement into a controllable ideological vessel. If featured a laundered list of party-proof bland rock bands, but also Kraftwerk, whose ...
