Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia II - Brittany - Climate
Since Brittany is on the west coast of France, it has a warm temperate climate. It does rain sometimes, which is one of the reasons its countryside is so green and wooded, but it is most likely that there will be more sun than cloud. It can get pretty hot in the summer months, up to about 30 degrees C, but unlike France south of the Loire, you are unlikely to get scorched to the tarmac. Overall, Brittany's climate is fair, not too hot and not too cold, and you are not likely to get too wet, only sometimes. Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia - Buckwheat

Common Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a plant in the genus Fagopyrum (sometimes merged into genus Polygonum) in the family Polygonaceae. With its congenor the Tartar Buckwheat, it is often counted as a cereal, though unlike most cereals the buckwheats are not true grasses. Buckwheat is thus not related to true wheat. Buckwheat is most likely descended from wild buckwheat, though it does not share its vine-like growth habit. Common buckwheat was domesticated and first cultivated in southwe ...

Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia - Elm

See text Elms are deciduous trees of the genus Ulmus, family Ulmaceae. They have alternate, simple, single- or doubly-serrate leaves, usually with asymmetric bases, often rough with fine bristles. The fruit is a round samara. There are between 20 to 45 species of elm; the ambiguity in the number is a result of difficult species delimitations in elms, due to the ease of hybridisation between them and the development of local seed-sterile vegetatively-propagated microspecies in some areas, mainly in th ...

The potato (plural form: potatoes) (Solanum tuberosum) is a perennial plant of the Solanaceae, or nightshade, family, grown for its starchy tuber. Growers cultivate thousands of different varieties of potato. The potato originated in the Andes, in the area of present-day Peru. Pre-Columbian inhabitants of the Andean cultures culti ...

Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia - Europe

Europe is conventionally considered one of the seven continents which, in this case, is more a cultural and political distinction than a physiogeographic one. Physically and geologically, Europe is a subcontinent or large peninsula, forming the westernmost part of Eurasia. Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia - Nationalism

The most general definition of nationalism is broad, and has been controversial throughout history. Specific examples of nationalism are extremely diverse. Extreme emotions are aroused when discussing nationalism, and that makes it difficult to describe and define nationalism. A recurring problem is that people define nationalism on the basis of their local experience. To a Breton nationalist, the central issue is state nationalism versus cultural nationalism; elsewhere that distinction may be irrelevant. Often supporters of nationalism fear ...

Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia II - London-Brabant Island - The Permian and Triassic

As the continent drifted northwards, away from the Equator, through the latitudes represented today by the Sahara desert, the erosion was renewed. This time, the lateritic soils are represented by the New Red Sandstone and the red soils of Leicestershire and Rutland. The early Permian was the time of the height of the Variscan earth movements as the crust to the south was crushed against the island. The great disturbances seen at the surface in Brittany, the Ardennes and the Rhineland also lie below the Paris Basin. They fade out in t ...

Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia II - London-Brabant Island - The Carboniferous

The period from which the island has exercised most influence on modern Europe was the Carboniferous. As the continent was drifting past the Equator, on the island's shores, there grew a rich tropical forest swamp. On the island's southern shore, it left the Dinantian, Namurian and Westphalian coal fields of France and Belgium. To its north-west, it left those of Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. These extend further east but at ever greater depth. At the modern east Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire coast for example, their upper su ...

Brittany - Climate: Encyclopedia II - London-Brabant Island - Rhaetic Transgression

In the early Jurassic, the Rhaetic sea flooded much of the Permian plain. On the margin of the London-Brabant Island, the estuarine conditions which left the Lower Estuarine Series prevailed for a while before the sea rose so as to deposit the Lincolnshire Limestones before falling again so that the Upper Estuarine Series was left. Again the sea rose to deposit the Blisworth Limestone, the Blisworth Clay and the Upper Jurassic clays. The same general pattern occurred in F ...
