| | | | | | | | | | | | British House of Commons: Encyclopedia II - Michael Collins Irish leader - Early lifeMichael John "Mick" Collins was born in Sam's Cross, near Clonakilty, in County Cork, Ireland in 1890. Although most biographies list his date of birth as October 16, 1890, his tombstone lists his date of birth as October 12, 1890. His family, muintir Uí Choileáin, had once been the lords of Uí Chonaill, near Limerick, but like many Irish gentry, had become dispossessed and reduced to the level of ordinary farmers. Yet their farm of 145 acres (0.9 km²) made them wealthier and more comfortable than most Irish farmers of late ...

| | | | British House of Commons: Encyclopedia II - Perth Western Australia - Tourist attractions in and around PerthA sun-baked city that can go weeks or even months without substantial rainfall, one of Perth's main attractions lies in the pristine quality of its beaches. Unbroken stretches of white beaches run the entire length of the city's coastal suburbs.
While not unlike the beach setting of the Gold Coast in Queensland, Perth has not experienced the same level of beachfront and riverfront development of other similar naturally rich Australian urb ...

| | | | British House of Commons: Encyclopedia II - Irish Houses of Parliament - Design of the new buildingPearce's design for the new Irish Houses of Parliament was revolutionary. The building was effectively semi-circular in shape, occupying nearly an acre and a half (6,000 m²) of ground. Unlike Chichester House, which was set far back from Hoggen Green, the new building was to open up directly onto the Green, as the above photograph shows. The principal entrance consisted of a colonnade of Ionic columns extending around three sides of the entrance quadrangle, forming a letter 'E' (see picture at the bottom of the page). Three stat ...

| | | | | British House of Commons: Encyclopedia II - Unreformed House of Commons - Composition of the HouseThe House of Commons consisted entirely of men, most of them men of substantial property, and (after the Glorious Revolution of 1688) entirely of Anglicans. All of these restrictions were in conformity with the dominant ideology of the time. Women could neither vote nor stand for election, and this was not questioned by any substantial number of people until well after 1832. Members of Parliament were not paid, which meant that only men of wealth could take the time to serve. In any case, candidates had to be electors, which meant that in most pl ...

United Nations Parliamentary Assembly - Basic options.
There are four basic options for creating a U.N. Parliamentary Assembly, according to Professor Andrew Strauss' report Taking Democracy Global:
Amend the UN Charter. This is difficult because it requires ratification by two-thirds of UN members, including all five permanent members of the Security Council. There have been only five amendments to the UN Charter since 1945. Louis Sohn and Grenville Clark, in their 1958 book World P ...

| | | | British House of Commons: Encyclopedia II - Satanic ritual abuse - Modern timesReports of SRA began occurring as early as the 1960s and coinciding with numerous cattle mutilations in the southwest. Following the publication of books purportedly by survivors or perpetrators, concern over SRA became more prominent, and in the 1980s a "Satanic panic" appeared to descend on some American Christian communities. According to the Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance, an "SRA industry" sprung up in this period, with self-appointed experts taking money to educate law en ...
