The 2.65 mile Grand Prix circuit was constructed in 1959, and the track hosted its first major motor racing event in August 1960, the non-championship Silver City Trophy Formula One race, won by Jack Brabham. Soon after, the track was sold to Grovewood Securities, and John Webb put in charge of Motor Racing Developments, to manage the circuit. The new ownership saw successful negotiations with the RAC to hold the British Grand Prix jointly with Silverstone, alternating years. On July 11, 1964, Brands Hatch held its first Formula One World Ch ...

A1 Grand Prix, often shortened to A1GP or simply A1, also known as the World Cup of Motorsport, is an international motor racing series, unique in the field of motorsport in that drivers compete for their country instead of a private team or constructor. Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - Porsche 908 - 1968

Despite winning the 1000km Nürburgring, the 908 was anything but convincing in 1968. The older and smaller 2200cc 907 had started the season with dominating wins and later delivered better results than Porsche's first serious attempt in the top prototype category, as old Ford GT40 were winning several races on the faster tracks. As sports cars with up to 5000cc were still allowed if at least 25 of them were produced, Porsche decided to go one step further and build the required 25 cars of the 5000cc sports car category - the new Porsche 917. This risky investment should take about a year, though, and the 908 was supposed ...

Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - Ayrton Senna - Death

In 1994, Senna finally left the ailing McLaren team for the top team at the end of 1993 Williams-Renault. On May 23 and 24, 2005, A1 Team Great Britain held a "shoot-out" evaluation test to select their driver(s) for the 2005-06 season. Chris Amon - 1960s. For the 1963 F1 season the Parnell team were using year-old Lola cars powered by year-old Climax V8 engines. Amon was teamed with the very-experienced Maurice Trintignant for the first race of the season at Monaco and his Grand Prix career started with what was to become typical bad luck: Trintignant's Climax developed a misfire, so he took over Amon's car. At the Belgian GP Amon was partnered by Lucien Bianchi and started ahead of him from fifteenth position. After nine laps, h ...

Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - British Touring Car Championship - Type of cars

Currently, the cars used are 2.0 L saloons, based on models from a variety of manufacturers, using technical regulations similar to the World Touring Car Championship. There are strict limits to the modifications which can be made to the cars, which are intended to reduce the cost of runing a competitive team, which had become prohibitive in the final years of the Supertouring rules. The teams are a mixture of works teams from manufacturers (currently Vauxhall and SEAT) and independent teams ...

Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - Lotus Europa - History

The concept originated during 1963 with drawings by Ron Hickman, director of Lotus Engineering (Designer of the original Lotus Elan, as well as the Black and Decker Workmate), for a bid on the Ford GT40 project. That contract ended up going to Lola instead, so Colin Chapman chose to use Hickman's aerodynamic design (with a still ultra low for today drag coefficient of .29) as the basis for a production model to succeed the ageless Lotus 7: the Europa. < ...

Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - European Grand Prix - Second Modern Incarnation

In 1990, a wealthy Japanese businessman, Tomonori Tsurumaki, built an extravagant (and remote) race track called Nippon Autopolis with the idea of hosting a Formula One race. In 1992, plans were made to have an Asian Grand Prix in 1993 to replace the Mexican Grand Prix on the schedule. However, these plans failed to materialize. Instead, Bernie Ecclestone added a race at Donington Park to the schedule, which brought back the European Grand Prix moniker. The race was the brainchild of Tom Wheatcroft, who had been trying to bring F1 to the tra ...

Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - European Touring Car Championship - ETCC 1963-1988

The ETCC, as it was known, was started in 1963 by Willy Stenger, who created the series at the behest of the FIA. It allowed a variety of touring cars of different sizes and displacements to race together, from the small Fiat 600 and Mini to the large Jaguar Mark 2, Mercedes-Benz 300SE and Chevrolet Camaro. In 1963 races or hillclimbing events at Nürburgring, Mont Ventoux, Brands Hatch, Mallory Park, Zolder, Zandvoort, Timmelsjoch and even in a park in Budapest counted tow ...

Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - Hesketh - Success with James Hunt in Formula One

Hesketh rented a Surtees TS9 for the non-championship Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, with Hunt finishing 3rd. This success led to the purchase of a March 731, with Hesketh also signing junior March designer Harvey Postlethwaite to modify the chassis, working from Hesketh's Easton Neston estate. The car made its first appearance at the 1973 Monaco Grand Prix, where Hunt ran 6th before the engine failed. He would score a point at the team's next entry, the French Grand Prix, improve to 4th for the British Grand Prix, then 3rd for the Dutch Grand Prix. He then took ...

Brands Hatch: Encyclopedia II - Ferrari P - 330 P4

1967 saw the ultimate mid-engined 330 P, the 330 P4. With a 3-valve cylinder head added to the P3's fuel injection system, output was up to 450 hp (335 kW). Only four were ever made.
