Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia - Boris III of Bulgaria

Tsar Boris III of Bulgaria (January 30, 1894 – August 28, 1943), originally Boris Klemens Robert Maria Pius Ludwig Stanislaus Xaver, son of Ferdinand I, came to the throne in 1918 upon the abdication of his father, following Bulgaria's defeat in World War I. This was the country's second major defeat in only five years, after the disastrous Second Balkan War (1913). Under the Treaty of Neuilly, Bulgaria was forced to cede land to its neighbors and pay crippling reparations, thereby threatening political and economic stability ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - Boris III of Bulgaria - Marriage and family

Boris married Giovanna of Savoy, daughter of Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, first in Assisi in October 1930, and then at an Orthodox ceremony in Sofia. The marriage produced a daughter, Marie-Louise in January 1933 and a son and heir in Simeon in 1937. In the early days of World War II, Bulgaria was neutral, but popular sentiment swayed toward Germany, which had forced Romania to cede southern Dobruja back to Bulgaria. In 1941, Boris reluctantly allied himself with the Axis Powers and joined Germany's war against Greece and the Yugosla ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - History of Independent Bulgaria - War and social conflict

History of Independent Bulgaria - World War I. In the aftermath of the Balkan Wars Bulgarian opinion turned against Russia and the western powers, whom the Bulgarians felt had done nothing to help them. The government of Vasil Radoslavov aligned Bulgaria with Germany and Austria-Hungary, even though this meant also becoming an ally of the Ottomans, Bulgaria's tradional enemy. But Bulgaria now had no claims against the Ottomans, whereas Serbia, Greece and Romania (allies of Britain and France) were all occupying B ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - History of Independent Bulgaria - The Balkan Wars

In 1911 the Nationalist Prime Minister, Ivan Geshov, set about forming an alliance with Greece and Serbia, and the three allies agreed to put aside their rivalries to plan a joint attack on the Ottomans. In February 1912 a secret treaty was signed between Bulgaria and Serbia, and in May 1912 a similar treaty was signed with Greece. Montenegro was also brought into the pact. The treaties provided for the partition of Macedonia and Thrace between the allies, although the lines of partition were left dangerously vague. After the Ottomans refused to implement reforms in the disputed areas, the First B ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - History of Independent Bulgaria - World War II and after

Under Filov's government Bulgaria drifted into World War II, faced by an Invasion and bribed by the return of southern Dobruja from Romania, on the orders of Hitler (see Vienna Award), in September 1940. In March 1941 Bulgaria formally signed the Tripartite Pact, becoming a German ally, and German troops entered the country in preparation for the German invasion of Greece and Yugoslavia. When Yugoslavia and Greece were defeated, Bulgaria was allowed to occupy all of Greek Thrace and most of Macedonia. Bulgaria declared war on Britain and the United States, but resisted German pressure to declare ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia - Victor Emmanuel III of Italy

Victor Emmanuel III of Italy , Vittorio Emanuele III in italian (11 November 1869 – 28 December 1947), was the King of Italy (29 July 1900 – 9 May 1946), Emperor of Ethiopia (1936 - 1943) and King of Albania (1939 - 1943). He was also mockingly nicknamed Sciaboletta, or "little saber", allegedly because his short stature required his uniform to be equipped with a saber shorter than the ordinary. Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - Victor Emmanuel III of Italy - Achievements and Failures

During his life, Victor Emmanuel III saw two world wars and the birth of Fascism. He remains Italy's most controversial monarch. His early reign showed evidence that, at least by the standards of the Savoyard monarchy, he was a man committed to a form of democracy. Yet, in his decision in 1922 to appoint Benito Mussolini prime minister (having refused formal government advice to fight the Fascist March on Rome, an act which provoked that government of Luigi Facta's resignation), and in particular his failure, in the face of mounting evidence ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - Bulgarians - Culture

Bulgarians - Contribution to humanity. Medieval Bulgaria was the most important cultural centre of the Slavs at the end of the 9th and throughout the 10th century. The two literary schools at Preslav and Ohrid developed a rich literary and cultural activity with writers of the rank of Constantine of Preslav, John Exarch, Chernorizets Hrabar, Clement and Naum of Ohrid. In the first half of the 10th century, the Cyrillic alphabet developed in northeastern Bulgaria on the basis of the Glagolitic and the Greek alphab ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - Use of ordinals by monarchs - The first

In some monarchies it is customary not to use an ordinal when there has been one holder of that name. For example, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom is not called Victoria I. This tradition is applied in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden and Norway. It was also applied in most of the German monarchies. Other monarchies do assign ordinals to monarchs who are the only ones of their name. This is a more recent invention and appears to be done for the first time when King Francis I of France issued t ...

Boris III of Bulgaria: Encyclopedia II - Use of ordinals by monarchs - Elizabeth Queen of Scots?

It is sometimes said that the present queen of the United Kingdom is not called Elizabeth II in Scotland, but simply Elizabeth, because she is the first monarch of her name to reign over Scotland. This is incorrect. Between 1603, when the crowns were united in the person of James VI, and the union in 1707, the monarchs were numbered separately. After that, a single ordinal was used throughout Great Britain, and this has always been consistent with the English sequence of sovereigns. Hence, Edward VII of the United Kingdom was called Edward VII throughout the entire United Kingd ...

Most Bulgarians live in the Republic of Bulgaria. There are significant traditional Bulgarian minorities in Moldova and Ukraine (Bessarabian Bulgarians), as well as smaller ones in Romania (Banat Bulgarians), Serbia (the Western Outlands), Greece (some 30,000 Muslim Bulgarians in the Xanthi and Rhodope provinces), the Republic of Macedonia, Albania, and Hungary.
