book burning: Encyclopedia II - Alamogordo, New Mexico - Atari Burial Grounds

In 1983, with the video game industry they had helped create crashing down around their ears, Atari warehouses were filled with millions of unsold game cartridges they had optimistically overproduced, including 5 million "E.T." cartridges. Basing a video game on a movie rather than an established arcade hit or a tested game premise (and expecting it to sell simply because of the popularity of the film) was a questionable enough decision, but the sheer awfulness of the finished product was unprecedented. Atari rushed "E.T." through developmen ...

book burning: Encyclopedia II - Disco Demolition Night - The Event

Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, two radio disc jockeys for the Chicago radio station WLUP, devised a promotion that involved people bringing unwanted disco music records to the game in exchange for a 98 cents (US) admission fee. It would prove to be the most ill-conceived promotional idea since the infamous "Ten Cent Beer Night" in Cleveland in 1974 [1]. This promotion apparently encouraged a lot of attendees who were not "typical" baseball fans. Sox TV announcers Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall commented freely on the "strange people" wan ...

Although Bill Veeck took much of the public heat for this fiasco, it was known among baseball people that his son Mike was the actual front-office "brains," as it were, behind this promotion. As a result, Mike was blackballed from the major leagues for a long time after his father retired. As Mike related in the book Slouching Toward Fargo, about the independent St. Paul Saints which he partly owns, "The second that first guy shimmied d ...

book burning: Encyclopedia II - Tillamook Burn - Restoration

Much of the lands of the Tillamook burn had come to be owned by the counties of Tillamook, Yamhill, and Washington through foreclosures on unpaid property taxes; at the time of the forest fires, most of the land was owned by timber companies who also paid the cost of fighting the fires. A measure was submitted by the Legislative Assembly to the voters to float a bond to finance reforestation, which narrowly passed in 1948. In a book published that same year, Stewart Holbrook wrote about the Tillamook burn in < ...

Abanes also is well-known for the words of caution he has voiced about the Harry Potter novels by J. K. Rowling. In addition to the many interviews and lectures he has given on this controversial subject, he has produced several resources on the issue including the bestselling Harry Potter and the Bible (Horizon Books, 2002) and Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings (Harvest House, 2005). Contrary to what some secular writers have alleged, Abanes has never advocated or endorsed book banning or book burning in r ...

book burning: Encyclopedia II - Institutional memory - Institutional knowledge

Institutional knowledge is commonly considered to be the knowledge gained through various resources which enable organizations to translate historical data into useful knowledge, or wisdom. Institutional memory depends upon the preservation of data and the analytical skills necessary for effective use of information, collectively, within an organization. Collective memory is mediated by the opportunities for, and control of, learning aimed at meeting or exceeding organizational objectives. Religion is, perhaps, the most powerful insti ...

book burning: Encyclopedia II - Institutional memory - Personal reminiscences

Prior to the advent of the written word, memories had been shared exclusively by other means. A great number of oral traditions can be traced back to the dawn of civilization, but many societies and languages have been extinquished, sometimes in recent history as a result of colonialism and the introduction of non-native cultures across the globe. Ensuring that the collective memory of non-electronic knowledge remains intact, however, will require collaborative efforts with, and the wisdom of, the cadre of elder citizens steeped in the knowledge of distant times and fading cultures.

book burning: Encyclopedia II - Tariq ibn-Ziyad - Ship burning

There is no mention in Muslim books of this intentional or accidental burning of the ships. The claim appears only in European sources. Indeed, there are a number of reasons why Tariq ibn Ziyad wouldn't have done such a thing. Not all of the ships were Muslim owned (Count Julian of Ceuta owned ships which sailed with Muslims in exchange for lands in Andalusia). The consequences of burning the ships would have been praised or punished by the Caliph, but no sources mention that the Caliph either praised or punished Tariq ...

book burning: Encyclopedia II - Lucius Tarquinius Superbus - Reign

When king Tarquin was approached by the Cumaean Sibyl, she offered him nine books of prophecy at an exorbitant price. Tarquin refused abruptly, and the Sibyl proceeded to burn three of the nine. She then offered him the remaining books, but at the same price. Tarquin hesitated, but refused again. The Sibyl then burned three more books and again offered Tarquin the three remaining Sibylline Books at the original price. At last Tarquin accepted. The books were consulted at many portentous moments in Roman history. For example, when Hannibal de ...

book burning: Encyclopedia II - A Book of Prefaces - Response

A Book of Prefaces - Critical Response. Response to Mencken's book was generally poor, but certain defenders of American culture were particularly outspoken in their criticism of the book - most notably Stuart Sherman, a professor at the University of Illinois (Sherman was personally attacked in Prefaces). According to Sherman: "[Mencken] leaps from the saddle with sabre flashing, stables his horse in the church, shoots the priest, hangs three professors, exiles the Academy, burns the library and the university, and amid smoking ashes, erects a new school ...
