Definition and meaning of Bonus Army:

Bonus Army

In June 1932, 20,000 World War I veterans marched on Washington, D.C., to demand immediate payment of their "adjusted compensation" bonuses voted by Congress in 1924. Congress rejected their demands, and President Hoover had the army forcefully remove them from their encampment. He feared their ranks were infested with criminals and radicals.

Bonus Army: Encyclopedia II - Bonus Army - Intervention of the military
The marchers were cleared and their camps were destroyed by federal cavalry troops under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, in a probable violation of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. Dwight D. Eisenhower, as a member of MacArthur's staff, had strong reservations about the operation, and George Patton was also ordered to take part in the operation. Troops with rifles and tear gas were sent into the Bonus Army's camps. President Hoover did not want the army to march across the Anacostia River into the protesters' largest encampment, bu ...

Bonus Army: Encyclopedia II - Business Plot - Background

In 1932, during the height of the Great Depression, the Bonus Army, composed of thousands of World War I veterans, demonstrated in Washington, D.C. seeking immediate payment of a "bonus" granted by the Adjusted Service Certificate Law of 1924, which deferred payment until 1945. They were led by Walter W. Waters, a former Army sergeant, and encouraged by an appearance from retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler. Butler had considerable influence over the veterans, being one of th ...

Bonus Army: Encyclopedia II - Bonus Army - Arrival in Washington

The Bonus Army massed at the United States Capitol on June 17 as the U.S. Senate considered the Patman Bonus Bill, which would give World War I veterans certain benefits. Most of the Bonus Army camped in makeshift camps (similar to Hoovervilles) on the Anacostia Flats, a swampy, muddy area across the Anacostia River from the federal core of Washington. The protesters had hoped that they could pressure Congress to change the law and make immediate payments, which would have provided relief for the marchers, many of whom were unemployed due to the Great Depression. The bill had passed the House of Repres ...

Bonus Army: Encyclopedia II - History of Washington D.C. - 20th century

President Herbert Hoover ordered the United States Army on July 28, 1932 to forcibly evict the "Bonus Army" of World War I veterans that gathered in Washington, D.C. to secure promised veterans' benefits early. U.S. troops dispersed the last of the "Bonus Army" the next day. A shooting at the U.S. Capitol occurred in 1954 when four Puerto Rican nationalists fired into the floor of the House of Repres ...

Bonus Army: Encyclopedia II - Herbert Hoover - Presidency

Hoover won the Republican Presidential nomination in 1928. He campaigned against Al Smith on the basis of efficiency and prosperity. Although Smith was the target of anti-Catholicism from the Baptist and Lutheran communities, Hoover avoided the religious issue. (Quakers for that matter were under some attack as pacifists.) He supported prohibition tentatively (calling it a "noble experiment"). Historians agree that Hoover's national reputation, and the booming economy, combined with the deep splits in the Democratic party over religion and p ...

At the onset of the USA's entry to World War I, General Pershing promoted Patton to the rank of Captain. While in France under the Third Republic, Patton requested that he be given a combat command and Pershing assigned him command within the newly formed U.S. Tank Corps.
