BODYWORK: The term bodywork refers to therapies such as massage, deep tissue manipulation, movement awareness, and energy balancing, which are employed to improve the structure and functioning of the human body.

Bodywork in all its forms helps to reduce pain, soothe injured muscles, stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation, and promote deep relaxation.

bodywork (Bodywork Therapy, bodywork therapies): A potpourri of methods typified by exercising, manipulating, and/or manually (especially digitally) touching the body. It overlaps with energy field work. The expression bodywork is generally interchangeable with hands-on healing and hands-on health.

The major categories of bodywork are:

(a)           massage therapy,

(b)          body-centered psychotherapy, and

(c)           touch therapy.

Its major foci are:

(a)           body structure (e.g., chiropractic),

(b)          body armor (e.g., Reichian Therapy),

(c)           chi or vital energy (e.g., acupressure massage, acupuncture, and jin shinn),

(d)           relaxation (e.g., lomi-lomi and Swedish massage), and

(e)           the subtle body (e.g., Reiki and Therapeutic Touch).

The word bodyworkers refers to practitioners of any form of bodywork that is not categorizable as acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, osteopathy, body-centered psychotherapy, touch therapy, or energy field work.

KRIPALU BODYWORK

The Kripalu bodyworker guides the client into a state of deep relaxation and meditation for the purpose of releasing physical and mental tension. This technique, based on Kripalu yoga, uses specific massage strokes and verbal/nonverbal procedures to aid clients in reconnecting with their body’s own healing wisdom.

CONSCIOUS BODYWORK

This form of neuromuscular reprogramming and therapy combines massage techniques with muscle testing in order to help people learn how to use their muscles with greater strength and less effort.

INSIGHT BODYWORK

Insight Bodywork, developed by Kondañña Barry Kapke, is a floor-based energy work that seamlessly integrates massage, movement, and meditation. Earthy, gentle, and spontaneous, its integrative approach to somatic discovery and education facilitates energetic balance and flow, brings awareness to embodied experience, and supports the body to find greater ease and ability.

Insight Bodywork utilizes acupressure and myofascial techniques, giving maximum support to the body while mobilizing joints, moving into slow deep stretches, integrating with soothing brushes and holds, and, when appropriate, energizing through shaking, rocking, swinging, or dropping. It is a work that is both playful and sacred in its approach.

ORIENTAL BODYWORK

Monitoring the flow of the vital life energy (known as chi, ki, or prana) is at the heart of Oriental bodywork. Using physical pressure and manipulation, the healer evaluates and modulates this energy flow to attain a state of balance.

Popular modalities include shiatsu, based on Chinese medicine; amma, a combination of East and West healing traditions; Jin Shin Do, utilizing oriental acupuncture and acupressure along with Taoist principles; Thai massage, blending Hindu and Chinese energy systems theory with techniques similar to shiatsu; and tui na, based on Chinese medicine and the traditional Japanese massage of amma (as distinct from the more recently developed amma therapy).

BREEMA BODYWORK

The Breema system places particular emphasis on the experience and comfort of the practitioner, teaching that we can best support others by being truly present with them.

Its Nine Principles of Harmony are key in this practical approach to self-understanding that nurtures and harmonizes the mind, body, and feelings of the practitioner as well as the recipient. Done with the recipient fully clothed on a padded floor, Breema bodywork uses a wide variety of rhythmic movements, gentle stretches, and fully-supported postures.

Structural Bodywork: System of deep tissue therapy promoted by Charles (Chuck) Ruland (see Somatic Dialogue and Structural Alignment). it can effect energetic Alignment, a body felt sense of Spirit, and the release of old habits and old trauma. Structural Bodywork appears identical to, or a variation of, Structural Alignment.
