 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - This Week in Tech - HistoryThe show started when Laporte recorded a "roundtable" between himself, Patrick Norton, Sarah Norton, Kevin Rose, David Prager, and Roger Chang at Macworld Expo 2005, and posted it to his weblog. (This episode is now referred to as "the pilot" or "episode 0".) They came up with the idea to make this into a weekly show featuring more former cast members from The Screen Savers. The first episode was posted on Monday, April 18, 2005, and weekly episodes have followed. (There has been one special "mid-week" s ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - Hamilton Tiger-Cats - Franchise historyOn Wednesday, November 3, 1869, in a room above George Lee's Fruit Store, the Hamilton Football Club was formed. In 1908, the Tigers won the dominion championship, a year before the Grey Cup was presented.
Prior to World War II, Hamilton's football team was known as the Tigers. The colours of yellow and black were well represented and the present philosophy of tough football was established in those early days. The only time that Hamilton football was interrupted as a ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - Dinosaurs TV series - Adult ThemesDinosaurs had several episodes with adult themes or references. At the end of the episode "A New Leaf," Robbie made a short public service announcement (asking to help put an end to preachy anti-drug episodes) in which he described the show as "adult-themed." In another episode, Earl made a self-referential joke while watching a puppet show, arguing that while the show had an aesthetic appeal to children, its humor was aimed at adults.
Indeed, despite the cartoonish violence that often occurred in the series, many jokes were ai ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - The Weakest Link - Format
The Weakest Link - Overview.
The original format featured a "team" of nine contestants who take turns answering general knowledge questions. The object of each round is to answer a "chain" of consecutive correct answers to earn an increasing amount for a single communal pot of up to ten thousand pounds. However, just one incorrect answer wipes out any money earned in that chain. Before their question is asked, a contestant may say "bank" and the money earned thus far is safely stored, however a new chain is initiated from scratch. It is advantageous but risky to not say bank, as each successive corr ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - This Week in Tech - Other detailsIn the first few episodes, the hosts talked about doing video chats through iChat and releasing both audio and video versions of the show. No mention of this idea was made again until episode 16, when Kevin Rose suggested that the Revision3 Studios camera crew could produce the video version.
Laporte announced in episode 3 that the show will always be free, and will never include advertising. Listeners can optionally "subscribe" via Paypal, at a cost of $2 per month or $20 per year, or give a one-time donation. These funds have been used to purchase radio-quality microphones ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - This Week in Tech - Spin-offsEpisodes of This Week in Tech usually feature a large number of hosts. Even with the episodes being around an hour long, there is not enough time to discuss all of the week's technology news stories, take listener questions, and talk about every host's current projects. Because of this, Laporte recently decided that he wants to create at least two additional podcasts. These spin-offs will be shorter, have ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - This Week in Tech - Distribution and licensingThe show is available in four formats: 64 kbit/s MP3, 32 kbit/s MP3, AAC, and Ogg Vorbis. Occasionally however these bitrates vary if a stereo version of the podcast is produced. The files are distributed via several means, including direct downloads with bandwidth provided by AOL and via bittorrent, a preferred method since this puts little strain on the official server.
The original server load went up significantly when iTunes 4.9 was released, since it has built-in support for podcasting but no support for BitTorrent. This causes ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - This Week in Tech - Production
This Week in Tech - Audio version.
The pilot episode was recorded when all of the hosts were together at the Macworld Expo 2005.
In episodes 1 through 20, Laporte talked to the other hosts through an Internet audio chat. They originally used Skype, but were limited by the number of users that could join a single conference call. Teamspeak was used in episode four to allow for more hosts to join, but there was a problem with latency (lagging). Skype has been used primarily since episode five, with Leo occasionally kicking one host out to allow for another one to join in for a ...

 | | | Bob Young: Encyclopedia II - Dinosaurs TV series - The Shows Within the ShowWhile Dinosaurs was, of course, a TV show, several jokes in the series were at the expense of television shows in general. Earl often wants to watch TV rather than do something more practical, and several jokes accuse television of "dumbing down" the population and making it lazy. Four episodes had themes related to television. In "Family Challenge," Earl gets the family to go on a game show in order to win a new TV when both of the household's televisions are destroyed. In "Fran Live," Fran gets a call-in show when she suggests that ...
