Boat - Types of Boats: Encyclopedia - Type XIV U-boat

The Type XIV U-boat was a modification of the Type IXD, designed to resupply other U-boats. Because they were nicknamed "Milchkuh/Milchkühe (pl.)" (milk cows), a common name for them was milchcow. They had no offensive weaponry, only antiaircraft guns. In the middle part of World War II, the Milk Cows successfully allowed the smaller Type VIIC boats to raid the American coast during the "second happy time". The milk cows were of course a priority target for all Allied forces, and improved radar and air coverage eliminated them during 1943. Milk cow duty was especially hazardous; 289 sailors were ...

Boat - Types of Boats: Encyclopedia - Ship

A ship is a large, sea-going watercraft, sometimes with multiple decks. A ship usually has sufficient size to carry its own boats, such as lifeboats, dinghies, or runabouts. A rule of thumb saying (though it doesn't always apply) goes: "a boat can fit on a ship, but a ship can't fit on a boat". Often local law and regulation will define the exact size (or the number of masts) which a boat requires to become a ship. (Note that one refers ...

Boat - Types of Boats: Encyclopedia - Canoe

A canoe is a relatively small boat, typically human-powered, but also commonly sailed. Canoes are pointed at both ends and usually open on top. In its human-powered form, the canoe is propelled by the use of paddles, with the number of paddlers depending on the size of canoe. Paddlers face in the direction of travel, either seated on supports in the hull, or kneeling directly upon the hull. In this way paddling a canoe can be contrasted with rowing, where the rowers face away from the direction of travel. Pa ...

The International 5.5 Metre Class was conceived as a type of racing keel boat which gave a similar sailing experience to the International 6 Metre Class but at a lower cost. Each 5.5 metre boat is unique because considerable variation is allowed by use of a design formula. The various design parameters of a new boat (eg, length, weight, sail area etc etc) are input into the 5.5 metre formula and the result must be 5.5 metres. If the result is not 5.5 then a parameter or combination of parameters must be adjusted to achieve a re ...
