Blood on the Tracks is a 1975 album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. In September 1974, Dylan entered the studio with a clutch of newly written songs, many inspired by his recent estrangement from his wife of ten years, Sara Lownds Dylan. All ten songs on the album were originally recorded at New York City sessions produced by Phil Ramone. With Columbia set to release the LP, Dylan pulled back at the last minute, and at year's end re-recorded five of the ten songs in Minneapolis with a crew of area session musici ...

More than two months after finishing his 1974 American tour with The Band, Dylan travelled back to New York City, where he looked up an art teacher, Norman Raeben. Dylan was working on his skills as a painter, and Raeben was recommended to him by his friends in California. In 1978, Dylan recalled that his friends "were talking about truth and love and beauty, and all these words I had heard for years, and they had 'em all defined...I asked them, 'Where do you come up with all those definitions?' and they told me about [Raeben]. I made a poin ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia - Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman on 24 May 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota) is an American singer-songwriter, musician and poet. He is one of America's most highly regarded songwriters, whose enduring contributions to American music are comparable to those of Stephen Foster, Irving Berlin, Woody Guthrie, and Hank Williams. Much of Dylan's best known work is from the 1960s, when he became an informal documentarian and reluctant figurehead of American unrest. Many involved in the anti-war and civil rights movements found a ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - Infidels - The Songs

Though Infidels is often cited as a return to secular work (following a trio of albums heavily influenced by born-again Christianity), many of the songs recorded during the Infidels sessions are filled with Biblical references and strong religious imagery. The most explicit example of this can be found on the opening track, "Jokerman." A surreal epic, "Jokerman" contains a number of lines referencing the Bible (almost 30), many of which are listed here: http:// ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - Slow Train Coming - Bob Dylan's Conversion To Christianity

By November of 1978, Dylan had received some of the worst reviews of his career. In late January, he finally premiered Renaldo and Clara, the part-fiction, part-concert film shot in the fall of 1975, during the first Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Though the performances were well-received (as expected as concert reviews from that time were very positive), the overwhelming majority of reviews were negative. A number of them were so harsh, Dylan saw them as personal attacks, particularly those by The Villa ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - The Basement Tapes - Columbia's release of The Basement Tapes compilation

On June 26, 1975, Columbia officially released a 24-song, double-album titled The Basement Tapes. Compiled and produced by Robbie Robertson, eight of the twenty-four songs did not feature Dylan, and of those eight, only four actually dated from the Big Pink sessions. All of the tracks were 'remixed' to mono while Robertson and other members of The Band overdubbed new piano, guitar, and/or drum parts over four of the original Dylan-Band recordings. Furthermore, songs like "I Shall Be Released," "The Mighty Quinn," "Sign on the Cross," ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - Blue - Naming and etymology

The modern English word blue comes from the Middle English, where it began to be used along with bleu, an Old French word of Germanic origin (possibly Old High German blao, "shining"). A Scots and Scottish English word for "blue-grey" is blae, from the Middle English bla ("dark blue," from the Old English blæd). As a curiosity, blue is thought to be cognate with blond and black, also with Latin flavus ("yellow"; see flavescent and flavine) and with Russian Р...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - Time Out of Mind - The Recording Sessions

Back in April of 1991, Dylan told Paul Zollo that "there was a time when the songs would come three or four at the same time, but those days are long gone...Once in awhile, the odd song will come to me like a bulldog at the garden state and demand to be written. But most of them are rejected out of my mind right away. You get caught up in wondering if anyone really needs to hear it. Maybe a person gets to the point where th ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - Bob Dylan - Musical career and personal life

Bob Dylan - Beginnings. Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota, on the extreme western shore of Lake Superior. His grandparents were Jewish emigrants from Lithuania, Russia and Ukraine, and his parents, Abraham Zimmerman and Beatric Stone (Beatty), were part of the area's small but close-knit Jewish community. He lived in Duluth until age seven, when his father was stricken with polio. The family returned to nearby Hibbing, Beatty's hom ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - Empire Burlesque - The Recording Sessions

Before embarking on a European tour in the summer of 1984, Dylan had spent a substantial amount of time recording demos of new songs in his Malibu home, accompanied at times by other musicians. In rehearsals for the tour, Dylan attempted at least three of these new songs, and he occasionally found time to polish their lyrics during the tour. When the tour was over, Dylan returned to New York and began work on his next studio album. As Clinton Heylin reports, Dylan recorded in sporadic sessions, as had become his norm, rather th ...

Blood on the Tracks: Encyclopedia II - Arthur Rimbaud - Life and work

He was born into the rural middle class of Charleville (now part of Charleville-Mézières) in the Ardennes département in northeastern France. As a boy Rimbaud was a restless but brilliant student. By the age of fifteen, he had won many prizes and composed original verses and dialogues in Latin. In 1870 his teacher Georges Izambard became Rimbaud's first literary mentor, and his original verses in French began to improve rapidly. He frequently ran away from home and may have briefly joined the Paris Commune of 1871, which he ...
