Blanche: Encyclopedia II - Hurricane Betsy - Impact

Betsy was one of the most intense, deadly, and costly storms to make landfall in the United States. The storm killed seventy six people in Louisiana. Betsy caused $1.42 billion in damage, which when adjusted for inflation amounts to $8.5 billion (2000 USD). Betsy was the first hurricane to cause damages in excess of $1 billion (based on damage at the time of the storm - many storms before then have inflation-adjusted damage over $1 billion); the storm thus e ...

Blanche: Encyclopedia II - The Von Bondies - Early Days

Around the turn of the century, two ex-college roomates, Jason Stollsteimer and Marcie Bolen, attended a concert by Japanese rock & roll giants Guitar Wolf. At the time, Stollsteimer was working a dead-end job as a bowling alley bartender. The performance spurred the pair to create their own band, and Stollsteimer replaced his drinking habits with devotion to guitar playing. After recruiting Lauren Wilcox (who was later replaced by Carrie Smith) on bass and Detroit-scene veteran Don Blum on percussion, the band was named the Babykillers. This was thankfully changed to the Von Bondies wh ...

Blanche: Encyclopedia II - The Von Bondies - Confrontation at the Magic Stick

The Von Bondies, unsatisfied with the unpolished sound and production of their debut album, recorded a set of BBC performances (Peel Sessions), which were compiled into the band's live album Raw and Rare. Its 2003 release felt like the debut album the Von Bondies had always hoped for. Unfortunately, some of Stollsteimer's comments about the muddy sound on Lack of Communication were misconstrued by the media into something much more negative. These miscommunications pr ...

Blanche: Encyclopedia II - The Von Bondies - Present

The Von Bondies received unparalleled publicity from the episode at the Magic Stick. Contrary to White's claim that Stollsteimer was exaggerating the incident to receive further exposure from the media, the other members of the band stood by their claim that they never wanted any of this "bad publicity." They also firmly dismissed any claims that they were using the incident to bolster the sales of their next album release. The Von Bondies released Pawn Shoppe Heart through Sire Records (known for signing such artists as Madonn ...

Blanche: Encyclopedia II - Hurricane Betsy - Trivia

Unusually, Betsy's track included not one but two complete loops. Betsy is comparable to 2005's Hurricane Katrina, which followed a similar path but caused more extensive damage and casualties in New Orleans. Numerous other hurricanes, including the highly-destructive Hurricane Andrew, 1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane, and 1926 Miami Hurricane, have also followed very similar paths. ...

Blanche: Encyclopedia II - Hurricane Betsy - Storm history

Betsy formed east of the Windward Islands, and moved north through the island chain as a tropical storm. When it was about 350 miles (560 km) east of Daytona Beach, Florida, and seemed to be on its way to hit the Carolinas, it turned back toward the southwest, passing over the Bahamas where winds on Great Abaco Island reached 147 mph (237 km/h). Betsy travelled just north of Nassau, the biggest city in the Bahamas, where it stalled for about t ...
