Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - James T. Aubrey Jr. - Final years

Aubrey became an independent producer after leaving MGM, producing ten films, none memorable. His greatest success was a 1979 television movie[2] about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders starring Jane Seymour—"broads, bosoms, and fun" once more. In the mid-1980s, he was chairman of Entermark, a production company which made low-budget films and backed by several wealthy Texans—including former Governor John Connally. "Our theory is that with today's ancillary rights, there is real profit in a movie that costs $3 million. We don't need to gr ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - James T. Aubrey Jr. - The interregnum

Aubrey, who left CBS with $2.5 million in network stock, moved to the Sunset Strip and set up a production company, The Aubrey Company. His attorney, Gregson E. Bautzer, in 1967 tried to buy the American Broadcasting Company for another client, the Las Vegas-based millionaire Howard Hughes. Aubrey was to have run ABC after the takeover, but the reclusive Hughes refused to testify in person at hearings before the Federal Communications Commission, whi ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - Whistle register - Physiology and definition

The physiology of the whistle register is the most poorly understood of the vocal registers. It is known that when producing pitches in this register vibration occurs only in some anterior portion of the vocal folds. This shorter vibrating length naturally allows for easier production of high pitches. The physiological process that causes this is not currently known. Though the whistle register is most commonly used to produce pitches above E6, it can be used to produce lower pitches. By the physiological definition just detailed, it ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - James T. Aubrey Jr. - Picked to run MGM

Aubrey resurfaced in 1969 when Las Vegas businessman Kirk Kerkorian took control of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio for the first time, ousting Canadian liquor magnate Edgar M. Bronfman, who had gained control earlier that year. Aubrey's attorney Gregson E. Bautzer also represented Kerkorian, and Bautzer recommended Aubrey for the MGM post. Aubrey, announced as MGM president on October 21, 1969, was Kerkorian's third choice after Herb Jaffe of United Artists and independent producer Mike Frankovich both declined the post, while producer Ray S ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - Citroën 2CV - Construction

The body was constructed of a dual H-frame chassis, an airplane-style tube framework, and a very thin steel shell. It was powered by a flat-twin air-cooled engine designed by Walter Becchia, with a nod to the classic 'boxer' BMW motorcycle engine (It's reported that Becchia dismantled the engine of the BMW motorcycle of one of his friends before designing the 2CV engine). (The flat-2 engine and thin steel body make a peculiar noise that can't be compared to anything, except perhaps a Piper J-3 at startup.) Front wheel drive made the car easy ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - Victor/Victoria - Music

The vocal numbers in the film are presented as real-life scenes or entertainments that involve singers; this explains why neither Toddy nor Marchand sings a duet with Victoria as part of some sort of private scene. Nevertheless, the lyrics or situations of some of the songs are calculated to relate to the unfolding drama. Thus, the two staged numbers "Le Jazz Hot" and "The Shady Dame from Seville" help to present Victoria as a male impersonator. The latter number is reinterpreted by Toddy for diversionary purposes in the plot. The cozy relationship of Toddy and Victoria is promoted by the song "You and Me," which is s ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - Citroën 2CV - 2CV in movies

The 2CV made several appearances in Louis de Funès's movies. In the opening scene of Le Corniaud a 2CV driven by Bourvil is totally destroyed in a collision with a Rolls-Royce driven by Louis de Funès. Les Amants (The Lovers)(1958)starring Jeanne Moreau, probably has more 2CV scenes than any other film. Some of the dialogue actually takes place in a 2CV whilst being driven. The film ends with the lovers escaping in a 2CV. In Zazie dans le métro (1960)with Catherine Demongeot and Philippe Noiret, many 2CVs can be seen in a traffic jam in the ...

Popular French nicknames were "Deuche" and "Dedeuche". They also called it "an umbrella on wheels" and "the big beast"." The Dutch were the first to call it "de lelijke eend", the ugly duck, while the Flemish called it "de geit", the goat. In Germany it is called "die Ente", the duck. English nicknames are Tin Snail and Dolly. In former Yugoslavia the car was called Spachek (like Sissy Spacek). In Chile it was known as the "citrola" or "citroneta". Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - 76th Academy Awards - News and recap

Billy Crystal returned for the eighth time to host the presentation. His opening monologue poked fun at the change (or lack thereof) between the time he had hosted the ceremony in 1991, and the current one: "Things were so different then. You know how different it was? Bush was president, the economy was tanking and we'd just finished a war with Iraq." However, the bulk of Crystal's good-natured barbs--and the comments of many of the presenters and award recipients as well--were directed at Return of the King, which dominated an evening lacking in surprises. The front-runner (or near front-runner) in every ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - Citroën 2CV - Rebirth?

The company Sorevie of Lodève is building 2CVs today. The cars are built from scratch using mostly new parts. But as a 2CV doesn't comply with modern regulations for new cars, the cars are sold as second-hand cars using chassis and engine number from old 2CVs. The 2CV-Méhari Club Cassis also recondition 2CVs. Recently they entered a 2CV prototype in the Paris-Dakar Rally; this was a twin engine car (like the 2CV S ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - United Artists - Film Archives

The value of film libraries has increased exponentially in recent years, even as ownership gets more fractured. Few studios had the foresight or ability to maintain control over every picture they produced or released. United Artists, through various strategic purchases, built up a substantial film library. Included were rights not only to some of UA's own releases, but to the pre-1948 Warner Bros. and RKO libraries. Having passed through numerous hands, this catalog now belongs ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - United Artists - The 1950s and 1960s

In 1951, two lawyers-turned-producers Arthur Krim and Robert Benjamin approached Pickford and Chaplin with a wild idea: let them take over United Artists for five years. If, at the end of those five years, UA was profitable, they would be given an option to buy the company. Since UA was barely alive, Pickford saw nothing to lose and agreed; Chaplin, not favorable at first, came around when his circumstances changed abruptly in 1952. Hounded by the American Legion and others for years over his left-wing politics and his lurid private l ...

Blake Edwards: Encyclopedia II - United Artists - The 1970s and 1980s

What Transamerica got was not just the UA name and library, but the expertise and experience of Krim, Benjamin and a team of others. For a time the flow of successful pictures continued. New talent was encouraged, including Woody Allen, Robert Altman, Sylvester Stallone, Saul Zaentz, Milos Forman, and Brian De Palma. In 1973 UA took over the sales and distribution of MGM's films. But insurance companies are a cautious, steady business. The ups-and-downs of movie making made them nervous. And then there were the costs; Hollywood has al ...
