In general, the relationship of the Latter Day Saint movement (Mormonism) with black people has more or less mirrored the sentiments of many other White Protestant denominations in the United States. Initially incorporating the generally anti-slavery views of the Northern communities in which the movement was founded, the leadership and ranking members moderated their positions as early as 1833 in response to pro-slavery sentiments in M ...

Blacks and Mormonism: Encyclopedia II - Mormonism - Mormonism as a theology

As a theology, Mormonism as a whole includes a highly diverse and eclectic cluster of religious beliefs. There is much in common with the Campbellite, Restorationist, and Universalist beliefs prevalent in the area where Joseph Smith was raised and where he began his ministry. Smith's theology was seen by contemporary Mormons as answering nearly all of the unresolved religious questions of his day. The bedrock Mormon belief, however, is the acceptance of modern prophecy; each individual may receive personal revelation to guide himself in his ...

Blacks and Mormonism: Encyclopedia II - Ed Decker - Criticism

Decker is not without controversy amongst fellow Evangelical Christian Apologists - some of whom (such as Jerald and Sandra Tanner and Bob Passantino) believe his writings misrepresent Mormonism, and thereby offends Mormons without attracting them to evangelical Christianity. Critics also point to his first wife's allegations that he was excommunicated for adultery and wife abuse - contrary to his claim that it was due to his change in beliefs. This a ...

Blacks and Mormonism: Encyclopedia II - Curse of Ham - Interpretations of the curse of Ham

Curse of Ham - Modern interpretations. Some believe that the curse of Ham is an early Hebrew rationalization for Israel's conquest and enslavement of the Canaanites, who were presumed to descend from Canaan. Others think that the curse of Ham actually came from Ham having a sexual relationship with Noah's wife. When it says that Ham saw his father's nakedness, he had lain with Noah's wife and produced Canaan as their offspring, which is why Noah cursed Canaan. Similar wording is used in Lev. 20:10: "The man that ...

Blacks and Mormonism: Encyclopedia II - Mormonism and Christianity - How early Mormonism diverged from mainstream Christianity

Mormonism arose in the Burned-over district of New York in the early 19th Century, primarily under the impetus of Joseph Smith, Jr., with the support of his father's family, David Whitmer and his father's family, trusted associate Oliver Cowdery, and later Sidney Rigdon (a former Campbellite pastor). Smith and the early Mormons were by most accounts typical early American Christians. Until the early 1830s, many (and some have argued most) American Christians, including prominent Protestant ministers and political leaders, pract ...
