Biofeedback Dictionary

Biofeedback: Using a biofeedback machine, practitioners teach patients how to control and change such autonomic body functions as blood pressure, heart rate, circulations, digestion and perspiration. Through monitoring "feedback" using auditory or visual cues, users extend their understanding of physiological functioning far past the normal five senses.

Biofeedback:

the process of furnishing an individual with information, usually in an auditory or visual mode, on the state of one or more physiological variables such as heart rate, blood pressure, or skin temperature; it often enables the individual to gain some voluntary control over the physiological variable being sampled. Biofeedback is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraine headaches, insomnia, and high blood pressure.

Biofeedback Without Machines: Modality for relatively stressless living and for tapping inner resources to discover one's identity and potential, according to George E. Soroka in Biofeedback Without Machines: A Strategy For Living (1994). Soroka's method joins biofeedback and a form of counseling that includes Transactional Analysis. In his book, Soroka states that everyone is plugged into the universe at large, that this connection is a transcendent source of awesome power, and that biofeedback enables one to begin an exploration of the cosmic energy force. He also suggests that God is immanent in humans.

Biofeedback

A scientific technique to tune into and consciously control bodily functions through the use of EEG (electroencephalographic) feedback instruments to monitor brain waves and skin resistance with the goal of modification of brain waves. and feeds that information back to the user.

Participants can learn to control heart rates or generate brain wave activity (alpha, beta, and delta) at will to induce altered states of consciousness. Enhances the capacity for relaxation and/or inducing meditative states and physiological control similar to that in yoga and Zen.

electroacupuncture biofeedback: Ostensibly diagnostic method developed by Reinhold Voll, M.D., of Germany, in the 1940s. Its theory posits the meridian system of acupuncture. In biological dentistry (holistic dentistry), electroacupuncture biofeedback involves application of an electrical current to a tooth. abnormal readings indicate an infection or disturbance near the tooth and, possibly, in the organ that shares a meridian with the tooth.

BIOFEEDBACK

Biofeedback utilizes a system of sensitive instruments that relay information about the physical condition of the body. Used as a primary therapy, or in conjunction with other methods, biofeedback provides deep relaxation and stress management skills to prevent stress-related disorders and illness. These skills, including deep breathing and guided imagery, offer self-regulation and control over mental, emotional, and physical processes. The principles of biofeedback can be traced back to the 18th century.

Biofeedback

uses electronic devices to monitor and to assist learning to control involuntary body processes, including blood pressure and pulse rate, as a way of modifying emotional states such as anxiety or depression. Galvanic biofeedback measures the skin's electrical conductivity while brainwave biofeedback monitors the different wavelengths of brain activity.

BIOFEEDBACK: A method of monitoring minute metabolic changes in one's own body with the aid of sensitive machines.

The technique is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia, and high blood pressure. Clients learn to make subtle adjustments to move toward a more balanced internal state by consciously visualizing, relaxing, or imagining while observing light, sound, or metered feedback.

These devices are not a means for "automagically" getting you luciddreams. Rather they provide signs that help you recognize your dreamsby means of external influence. Using these dream-signs is still up toyourself and requires quite some amount of training.

Software to make your computer screen act as a flashlight: thehyperreal.com (not techno.stanford.edu any more) WWW/FTP server hasthis, among much other interesting stuff. I know of an MSDOS programcalled "flasher" which can be found there and another similar thingfor Linux that someone has promised to upload. Such programs canperhaps be used as a replacement for the less sophisticated sort ofeqipment as described above.

NeuroBioFeedback (NBF): Combination of biofeedback and neural therapy. The Alexandria institute (Hastings-on-Hudson, New York) defines neural therapy as a non-invasive, highly effective means to create efficient brain function using only light and sound.

NeuroBioFeedback is a way to create healthy patterns of brain functioning. Its apparent principle is that the mind and body can function well when the brain is fit and functioning well. NBF in conjunction with sport psychology mental skills training techniques may enable reaching the ZONE (see Three Phase Workout) at will. One of NBF's major promoters is hypnotherapist and aromatherapist Bob Reese, A.T.C., C.P.P.T. (Certified Peak Performance Trainer.).
