Biofeedback

Biofeedback: Natural Health Therapy Dictionary on Biofeedback

BIOFEEDBACK: A method of monitoring minute metabolic changes in one's own body with the aid of sensitive machines.

The technique is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia, and high blood pressure. Clients learn to make subtle adjustments to move toward a more balanced internal state by consciously visualizing, relaxing, or imagining while observing light, sound, or metered feedback.

Biofeedback: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on BIOFEEDBACK

BIOFEEDBACK

Biofeedback utilizes a system of sensitive instruments that relay information about the physical condition of the body. Used as a primary therapy, or in conjunction with other methods, biofeedback provides deep relaxation and stress management skills to prevent stress-related disorders and illness. These skills, including deep breathing and guided imagery, offer self-regulation and control over mental, emotional, and physical processes. The principles of biofeedback can be traced back to the 18th century.

Biofeedback: Holistic Health Dictionary I on BIOFEEDBACK

BIOFEEDBACK

Is the means by which one can monitor how one functions on a physical and emotional level, by using a simple, non-invasive electronic means of monitoring these functions. This method provides useful information, and signals the change that we initiate with intent, to alter any inappropriate circumstance or condition, like lowering blood pressure.

Biofeedback instruments record continuous information about subtle changes in physiological stress responses (such as muscle tension, temperature, respiration, skin resistance or heart rate). Using this information, various guided relaxation techniques are employed to control the appropriate symptoms, which can include anything from anxiety to muscle spasms.

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia II - Human Potential Movement - Criticism

The movement has received criticism in two forms. The first is from researchers in psychology, medicine, and science who often dismiss the movement as being grounded in pseudoscience, overusing psychobabble, and whose efficacy can be explained entirely by placebo. This criticism was expressed by Richard Feynman's response to his visit at Esalen. However, a technique may still be useful despite a pseudoscientific or religious background. The crucial point is whether critics are correct in asserting that the techniques of the human pote ...

Biofeedback: Alternative Health Dictionary on Biofeedback Without Machines

Biofeedback Without Machines: Modality for relatively stressless living and for tapping inner resources to discover one's identity and potential, according to George E. Soroka in Biofeedback Without Machines: A Strategy For Living (1994). Soroka's method joins biofeedback and a form of counseling that includes Transactional Analysis. In his book, Soroka states that everyone is plugged into the universe at large, that this connection is a transcendent source of awesome power, and that biofeedback enables one to begin an exploration of the cosmic energy force. He also suggests that God is immanent in humans.

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia II - Human Potential Movement - Relationship to other fields

The movement is sometimes considered to be under the broader umbrella of the New Age movement. It is distinguished ideologically from other New Age trends by an emphasis on the individual development of secular human capabilities as opposed to the more spiritual views within the movement. However, participants rarely make this distinction and it is common to find that most who embrace the ideas of the human potential movement also tend to embrace the other more spiritual ideas within the New Age movement. It is in many ways the progenito ...
