Biofeedback: What is Biofeedback?

The word "biofeedback" was coined in the late 1969 to describe laboratory procedures that trained research subjects to alter brain activity, blood pressure, muscle tension, heart rate and other bodily functions that are not normally controlled voluntarily. Biofeedback is a training technique in which people are taught to improve their health and performance by using signals from their own bodies.

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) which involves measuring bodily processes such as blood pressure, heart rate, skin temperature, galvanic skin response (sweating), and muscle tension in order to raise a subject's awareness and conscious control of these functions. Devices as simple as mirrors and bathroom scales can be considered rudimentary biofeedback devices, insofar as the information they provide can help a person with issues related to posture and weight; more complex biofeedback devices have ...

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia II - Biofeedback - Types of biofeedback

One variety of biofeedback is EEG feedback, which uses electrodes placed on the scalp to garner information about the user's brainwaves. This type of biofeedback is discussed in the article neurofeedback. Other types of biofeedback include the following: electromyogram biofeedback, which uses sensors and electrodes to measure muscle tension, and which is used to treat stress-related illnesses, such as asthma and ulcers galvanic skin tension biofeedback, which measures the minute activities of sweat glands and whi ...

Biofeedback: Biofeedback – A non-drug, hi-tech system!

To an uninformed observer, the sight of a biofeedback session may look like something straight out of a science-fantasy. In a typical setting, the patient sits in a soundproof room, surrounded by blinking electronic gadgets. Electrodes taped on her skin surface, forehead, chest or any part of the body chosen as the target area, are attached to a machine that makes audible clicking noises and flashes signals of varying intensity and frequency. So, what's actually happening here?

Biofeedback: Your Brain and Neurofeedback - A Beginner's Manual

Biofeedback as a field has been growing since the late 1960s. This form of training and treatment uses monitoring instruments attached to the body to "feed back" to people information on the functioning of their bodies. In this way, people view information of which they are not normally aware, such as hand temperature, blood pressure, number and depth of breaths being taken, level of muscle tension in any target muscle, or the electrical activity of their brains. It has been established that, once people have more detailed access to information on what their bodies are doing, they are able to either consciously or subconsciously alter or control those functions.

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia II - Biofeedback - Origins of biofeedback

Neal Miller, a psychology Ph.d and neuroscientist who worked and studied at Yale, is generally considered to be the father of modern-day biofeedback. He came across the basic principles of biofeedback when doing animal experimentation conditioning the behavior of rats. His team found that, by stimulating the pleasure centers of the rats' brains with electricity, it was possible to train rats to control phenomena ranging from their heart rates to their brainwaves. Until that point, it was believed that bodily processes like heart rate were under the control of the autonomic ner ...

Biofeedback: DNA is influneced by words and frequencies

The human DNA is a biological Internet and superior in many aspects to the artificial one. The latest Russian scientific research directly or indirectly explains phenomena such as clairvoyance, intuition, spontaneous and remote acts of healing, self healing, affirmation techniques, unusual light/auras around people (namely spiritual masters), the minds influence on weather patterns and much more.

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Human Potential Movement

The Human Potential Movement came out of the social and intellectual milieu of the 1960s and was formed to promote the cultivation of extraordinary potential believed to be largely untapped in most people. The movement is premised on the belief that through the development of human potential, humans can experience an exceptional quality of life filled with happiness, creativity, and fulfillment. A corollary belief is often that those who begin to unleash this potential will find their actions within society to be directed towards help ...

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary excretion of urine from one's body. It is often temporary, and it almost always results from an underlying medical condition. In this article, the term "incontinence" will be used to mean urinary incontinence. See also fecal incontinence. Urinary incontinence - Urinary incontinence in women. Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Behavior modification

Behavior Modification is a technique of altering an individuals reactions to stimuli through positive reinforcement and the extinction of maladaptive behavior. While founded in behaviorism, Behavior modification has long been used by psychotherapists, parents, and caretakers of the disabled, generally without any underlying behaviorist philosophy. It involves the most basic of methods to alter human behavior, such as reward and punishment, aversion therapy, reinforcement, and even biofeedback. The cultivation of life skills are ...

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback (NFB), also called neurotherapy, neurobiofeedback or EEG biofeedback, enables an individual to train brainwave activity, as measured by electrodes on the scalp, via feedback of EEG information in the form of a video display, sound or vibration. If brain activity changes in the direction desired by the therapist, a positive "reward" feedback is given to the individual, and if it regresses, either a negative feedback or no feedback is given (depending on the protocol). Rewards can be as simple as a cha ...

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Alpha wave

Alpha waves are electromagnetic oscillations in the frequency range of 8-12 Hz arising from synchronous and coherent (in phase / constructive) electrical activity of large groups of neurons in the human brain. They are also called Berger's wave in memory of the founder of EEG. Alpha waves are commonly detected by electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) and predominantly found to originate from the occipital lobe during periods of relaxation, with eyes closed but still awak ...

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Bioelectromagnetism

Bioelectromagnetism (sometimes equated with bioelectricity) refers to the static voltage of biological cells and to the electric currents that flow in living tissues, such as nerves and muscles, as a result of action potentials. Bioelectromagnetism - Description. Biological cells use bioelectricity to store metabolic energy, to do work or trigger internal changes, and to signal one another. Bioelectromagnetism is the electric current produced by action potentials along with the magnetic fields they g ...

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Relaxation technique

Relaxation Techniques have long been included in sitcoms and cartoons, used in particular by those with anger management problems. The most famous of the techniques from a sitcom is "Serenity now" from the popular sitcom Seinfeld. These techniques do in fact work in real life. These usually involve some variation or combination of counting or breathing. Some particularly well established relaxation techniques are as follows: Inhaling deeply, holding the breath, and then counting slowly to ten before releasing breath ...

Biofeedback: Encyclopedia - Alvin Lucier

Alvin Lucier (born May 14, 1931) is an American composer of music and sound installations exploring acoustic phenomena, especially resonance, as well as a former member of the Sonic Arts Union along with Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma. As a self-acknowledged composer of experimental music, Lucier's compositions generally deal with some element of indeterminacy. Lucier was born in Nashua, New Hampshire and studied at Yale and Brandeis University and ...
