Bill Wilson: Encyclopedia II - Harold Wilson - Opposition
Wilson soon proved a very effective Shadow Minister. One of his procedural moves caused the loss of the Government's Finance Bill in 1955, and his speeches as Shadow Chancellor from 1956 were widely praised for their clarity and wit. He coined the term "Gnomes of Zurich" to describe Swiss bankers whom he accused of pushing the pound down by speculation. In the meantime, he conducted an inquiry into the Labour Party's organisation following its defeat in the 1955 general election, which made several useful recommendations for improvements. Unusually, Wilson combined the job of Chairman of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committ ...

Bill Wilson: Encyclopedia - W. D. Hamilton

Professor William Donald "Bill" Hamilton, F.R.S. (1 August 1936 — 7 March 2000) was a British evolutionary biologist. Hamilton became famous for his theoretical work expounding a rigorous genetic basis for the existence of kin selection. This insight formed part of the Williams Revolution and he can therefore be seen as one of the forerunners of the discipline of sociobiology founded by Edward Osborne Wilson. Hamilton also published important work on sex ratios and the evolution of sex. W. D. Hamilton - Biography. < ...

Bill Wilson: Encyclopedia II - History

The first such program was Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), which was begun in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, known to A.A. members as "Bill W." and "Dr. Bob." They established the tradition within the "Anonymous" twelve-step programs of using only first names. The Twelve Steps were originally written by Wilson and other early members of AA to codify the process that they felt had worked for them personally. The Twelve Steps were essentially a rewriting of the 6 steps of the Oxford Group with whom Wilson had contact. This "codex" is the book Alcoholics Anon ...

Bill Wilson: Encyclopedia II - United States Department of Labor - History

President William Howard Taft signed The Organic Act of the Department of Labor establishing the Department of Labor on March 4, 1913, his last day in office. He was reluctant to create the new department because he felt that the existing Cabinet departments needed reorganization before any new departments were created. However, realizing that his successor, Woodrow Wilson would likely create the department anyway, Taft signed the bill. In a memorandum written before signing the bill, Taft said, "I sign this bill with considerable hesitation ...

Bill Wilson: Encyclopedia II - Marv Levy - General Manager

On January 5, 2006, Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. enlisted Levy, at the age of 80, to act as General Manager and Vice President of Football Operations for the Buffalo Bills. Following the resignation of Mike Mularkey, there was initial speculation (created by Levy's own comments at a team press conference) that Levy would resume a head coaching role with the team. Soon thereafter, Levy released a statement presumably eliminating himself as a candidate for head coach: In order to clear up any misunderstanding [arising from ambi ...

Bill Wilson: Encyclopedia II - Dick Morris - Other work

Morris makes it known that he is a bipartisan consultant. In addition to his work with Bill Clinton, he once worked for senators Trent Lott and Jesse Helms, as well as former governors William Weld of Massachusetts and Pete Wilson of California and current governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas. As early as 1988, he has said, he decided to work only for Republicans, a claim reiterated in 1995; his role in Clinton's 1992 campaign and presidency was kept secret from the staff. He is not believed to have worked as a U.S. political strategist since the scandal of 1996, possibly because of candidates' fears that their choic ...

Bill Wilson: Encyclopedia II - Timoci Silatolu - Treason conviction and related developments

On 21 March 2003, Justice Andrew Wilson found Silatolu guilty of having alerted his co-conspirators on 19 May 2000 by making a telephone call informing them that the time to strike was right, and of taking an illegal oath of ministerial office. He was initially named Prime Minister by the coup's chief instigator, George Speight; this position was downgraded the next day to Deputy Prime Minister when Speight himself chose to assume the prime ministerial office. In June 2003, Silatolu was sentenced to life imprisonment, fol ...
