Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Saturday Night Live musical sketches - The Céline Dion Show

The Céline Dion Show was faux talk/variety show in which Ana Gasteyer played the Grammy award-winning singer, who in the opening credits, claimed to be the most beautiful and most loved singer in the world. The sketch was inspired by Dion's success in the wake of her number one Billboard Hot 100 hit "My Heart Will Go On" in 1998 But in this case (the show, that is), she had a habit of upstaging her guests or interrupting them by joining them in a son ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Saturday Night Live musical sketches - Janet Reno's Dance Party

Janet Reno's Dance Party ("coming to you live, from my basement") was a Saturday Night Live sketch with Will Ferrell as Reno. It aired four times, and the last time the sketch aired, the real Janet Reno showed up to dance. (The press noticed afterwards how good a sport she was.) Saturday Night Live musical sketches - Will Ferrell on Janet Reno. "It was all her idea to come on the show, and I was impressed with her. Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Saturday Night Live musical sketches - The Culp Family Musical Performances

The Culps were two recurring characters on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Marty Culp (Will Ferrell), a guileless, balding, middle-aged man, and his wife Bobbi Mohan-Culp (Ana Gasteyer), who teaches alongside her husband at Altadena Middle School, make up the Culp Family. They perform at various school functions, singing medleys of recent pop songs in their own conservative style. Marty plays the keyboard and sings backup, while Bobbi leads the singing with her high-pitched, operatic vocals. In between medleys, the Culps make comments ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Titanic 1997 film - U.S. awards

Titanic won Oscars in just about every category it was nominated in except for the acting and makeup categories. Titanic was nominated in 14 categories and won 11, being the second movie to win that number (the first was Ben-Hur with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King matching the record in 2004). It was at the time also the only movie of which both two people playing the same person (Kate Winslet as Rose and Gloria Stuart as Old Rose) were nominated (coincidentally, the second film to be so nominated, ...

Buffett has written three No. 1 best sellers. Tales From Margaritaville and Where Is Joe Merchant? both spent over seven months on the New York Times Best Seller fiction list. His book A Pirate Looks At Fifty went straight to No. 1 on the New York Times Bestseller non-fiction list, making him the sixth author in that list's history to have reached No. 1 on both the fiction and non-fiction lists. The other five authors who have accomplished this are Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, William Styron, Irving Wallace and Dr. Seuss. Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Aliens 1986 film - Impact

The depiction of the female characters, especially Ripley and the ultra-macho Private Vasquez, as fearless warriors made a considerable impression in the North American perception of women in action films, particularly in futuristic science fiction. Corporal Dietrich and Pilot Ferro as well both demonstrated a professional competence in their military roles, a diversion from previous films where the heroine lacked such strengths and apparent senses of duty. Since Aliens, it grew to be expected in futuristic stories that the female characters be as ready to bear arms and do battle ...

The theatrical running time of Aliens was 137 minutes. Later, Cameron cut together a 154 minute Special Edition (not considered a Director's Cut since James Cameron was happy with the theatrical cut) that contained the daughter subplot as well as scenes of the colony before the alien infestation and extra battle scenes involving the marines' robot sentries. The original theatrical cut introduces an element of uncertainty into the proceedings - the backstory about Newt's parents is not shown, and the audience is (at least for fi ...

Aliens was nominated for seven Academy Awards and ended up winning two (Sound Effects Editing and Visual Effects). Sigourney Weaver received her first Academy Award nomination (Best Actress) for this film. Although Weaver did not actually win, it was considered a landmark for a nomination for Best Actress to even be made for a science fiction / horror film, a genre usually given little recognition by the Academy in those years. Another actor whose career benefited from Aliens was Bill Paxton; he plays the reluctant grunt ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Titanic 1997 film - Deleted scenes

The 2005 DVD release included about 45 minutes worth of deleted scenes that were cut from the film either for pacing, to shorten the film to a marketable running time, or for reasons James Cameron describes in his commentary as "tonal". Some of the cut sequences are minor additions, while others are major scenes. The public were first made aware of many of these deleted scenes with the publication of Titanic's screenplay in 1998 and a few of them were first shown in a Fox TV special detailing the making of the film, and later Cameron ...

Some aspects of the story were sufficiently similar to two episodes of the TV series The Outer Limits — both episodes written by Harlan Ellison — that Ellison pursued legal action against Cameron. Cameron settled out of court and acknowledged Ellison's work in the film's credits. The episodes in question were called "Soldier" (which involves a specially-trained man sent back in time to assassinate a rival) and "Demon With A Glass Hand" (concerning a time traveler who suffers memory loss and relies on a computer chip implanted in h ...

Titanic generally opened to lukewarm reviews. Many reviewers felt the story and dialogue were weak while the visuals were spectacular. Jeff Millar of the Houston Chronicle wrote, "When the ship does hit the berg, at the one-hour-and-45-minute point, we are immediately compensated for the padding in writer-director James Cameron's basic narrative — a shipboard romance."[1] Titanic's cost and size was compared to classic Hollywood ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Binding of Isaac - Modern-day interpretations

It also figures prominently in the writings of many major modern theologians, such as Søren Kierkegaard in Fear and Trembling and Shalom Spiegel in The Last Trial. In Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, the literary critic Erich Auerbach considers the Hebrew narrative of the Binding of Isaac, along with Homer's description of Odysseus's scar, as the two paradigmatic models for the representation of reality in literature. Auerbach contrasts Homer's attention to detail and foregrounding of ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Binding of Isaac - Muslim responses

Traditionally, Muslims believe that it was Ishmael rather than Isaac whom Abraham was told to sacrifice. In support of this, Muslims note that the text of Genesis as it stands, despite specifying Isaac, appears to state that Abraham was told to sacrifice his only son ("Take now thy son, thine only son, whom thou lovest, even Isaac," Genesis 22:2) to God. Since Isaac was Abraham's second son, there was no time at which he would have been Abraham's only son, so they take this to imply that the original text must have named Ishmael rather than Isaac as the intended sacrifice. The Qur'an itself does not spec ...
