The Evil Dead (1983) became a major hit and he began work on his second film Crimewave (1985), intended as a live-action comic book - the film was not successful due to unwanted studio intervention. Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Miami Vice - Television Series

In the early 1980s, the head of NBC's Entertainment Division, Brandon Tartikoff, reportedly wrote a brainstorming memo that simply read "MTV cops". The result was Michael Mann's production of Miami Vice. While the series had many regulars, it focused primarily on two lead characters. James "Sonny" Crockett, a former University of Florida college football star (wide receiver), became a police detective after a tour in Vietnam; as the series begins he is a vice officer with an elaborate cover, including a Ferrari Daytona Spider, ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Apollo 13 - Mission highlights

When Apollo 13 was 321,860 kilometers (199,990 mi) from Earth, an oxygen tank in the service module exploded. The only solution was for the crew to cancel their planned landing, swing around the Moon and return on a trajectory back to Earth. However, because their command/service module "Odyssey" was severely damaged, the three astronauts had to use the lunar module "Aquarius" as a crowded lifeboat for the return home. The four-day return trip was cold, uncomfortable, and tense. But Apollo 13 proved the program's ability to weather a major crisis and bring the crew back home safely.See also:

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Stripes film - Plot summary

Two losers, John Winger (Murray) and Russell Ziskey (Ramis), sign up in the army thinking that it would be a good way to meet girls. Along the way they get on the wrong side of their drill sergeant, bluff their way through graduation, and get involved in mud wrestling. The movie is "dated" in some ways, as it is set in Cold War Europe, but the humor is generally based on broader concepts that are still amusing. Like many military movies, Stripes is like two movies in one; the first part is set in boot camp, while the latter part shows ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Titanic 1997 film - Criticism and reception

Titanic received a great deal of negative advance publicity for its budget overruns and delayed release. When it was released reviews were somewhat mixed, but not as negative as many had anticipated. Some reviewers felt the story and dialogue were weak while the visuals were spectacular. Jeff Millar of the Houston Chronicle wrote, "When the ship does hit the berg, at the one-hour-and-45-minute point, we are immediately compensated for the padding in writer-director James Cameron's basic narrative — a shipboard romance."See also:

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - The Terminator - Inspirations

Some aspects of the story were sufficiently similar to two episodes of the TV series The Outer Limits — both episodes written by Harlan Ellison — that Ellison pursued legal action against Cameron. Cameron settled out of court and acknowledged Ellison's work in the film's credits. The episodes in question were called "Soldier" (which involves a specially-trained man sent back in time to assassinate a rival) and "Demon with a Glass Hand" (concerning a time traveler who suffers memory loss and relies on a computer chip implanted in h ...

Bill Paxton: Encyclopedia II - Saturday Night Live musical sketches - Rap Street

Rap Street was a TV show sketch which appeared twice on Saturday Night Live. The hosts of Rap Street, Grandmaster Rap (a take-off on Grandmaster Flash played by Jerry Minor) and Kid Shazzam (Horatio Sanz) were caricatures of old school rappers who hearkened back to the early days of rap. They would often refer to their time spent in the Vietnam War, mention friends of theirs who had great-grandchildren or hip problems, and use plural forms where they didn't belong (i.e. "Vietnams", "hip-hops"). They spoke out against profanity in rap music, ...
