Definition and meaning of big lie:

big lie

The "big lie" is a tactic used to smear the reputation of someone by making outrageous allegations about his or her behavior or affiliations. It was the favorite tactic of Senator Joseph McCarthy in the early 1950s when he conducted a witch-hunt for communists in the federal government.

The phrase Big Lie refers to a propaganda technique which originated with Adolf Hitler's 1925 autobiography Mein Kampf. In that book Hitler wrote that people came to believe that Germany lost World War I in the field due to a propaganda technique used by Jews who were influential in the German press. This technique, he believed, consisted of telling a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe anyone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously". I always knew that I was different- not only in appearance from my peers, but also different inside, in my mind and my thoughts. I would tell my childhood peers things that made perfect sense to me (or to an adult), but would go completely over their heads. I was soon labeled a 'weirdo' and shunned. I didn't know it at the time, but most of the stuff that I 'just knew' had to do with the semi-conscious realization that I'd been here before.
