Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz or Even Yisrael (born 1937) is a teacher, philosopher, social critic and prolific author who has been hailed by Time magazine as a "once-in-a-millennium scholar." In 1940, after his mother was killed by invading Nazis during the Holocaust, Aharon Appelfeld and his father were forced into a ghetto and later deported to a concentration camp.
