Buddhists seek refuge in what are often referred to as the Three Jewels, Triple Gem or Triple Jewel. These are the Buddha, the Dharma (or Dhamma), and the "noble" (Sanskrit: arya) Sangha or community of monks and nuns who have become enlightened. While it is impossible to escape one's karma or the effects caused by previous thoughts, words and deeds, it is possible to avoid the suffering that comes from it by becoming enlightened. In this way, dharma offers a refuge. Dharma, used in the sense of the Buddha's teachings, provides a raft and is thus a temporary refuge while entering and crossing the river. However, the real refuge is on the other side of the river.

The Buddha taught that life was dissatisfactory because of craving, but that this condition was curable by following the eightfold path. This teaching is called the four noble truths:

1. Dukkha: All worldly life is unsatisfactory, disjointed, containing suffering.

2. Samudaya: There is a cause of suffering, which is attachment or desire (tanha) rooted in ignorance.

3. Nirodha: There is an end of suffering, which is Nirvana.

4. Marga: There is a path that leads out of suffering, known as the Noble Eightfold Path.

Beliefs are the building blocks of the mind. Our beliefs determine our thoughts and attitudes about life, which in turn direct our actions. By our actions we create our destiny. Beliefs about sacred matters�God, man and cosmos�are essential to one�s approach to enlightenment. But beliefs are not mere matters of agreement. They are what we value and hold as true. Hindus believe many diverse things, but there are a few bedrock concepts on which most Hindus concur. The following nine beliefs, though not exhaustive, offer a simple summary of Hindu spirituality.

A student of science once confided to me after some hesitation: "I've no faith in God." "Never mind," I said. "God won't mind!" "He won't, right?" was the young man's unguarded response, not without an air of relief.

The student no doubt represented the large number of agnostics whose 'no belief' is a vague proposition. But there are others who are firm in their belief that they do not believe.

However, an honest examination would show that what they do not believe in was a particular idea of God. Many take the concept of God they inherited from their family or milieu for granted, without analysing or questioning it and then quarrel with it, accept it or reject it.
