Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Wanamaker's - Beginnings

John Wanamaker, the founder of the store that bears his name, was not able to join the Union army during the US Civil War due to a persistent cough. Instead of being involved in war duty, he and his brother in law, Nathan Brown, began in 1861 a men's clothing store in Philadelphia called Oak Hall. Desiring to find more space for his very successful business, Wanamaker (who carried on with the business after Brown's death in 1868) obtained the abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad terminal in the City of Brotherly Love for use as a retail location. ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Lucid Inc. - Beginnings

Gabriel had been working for Lawrence Livermore National Labs, on a computer hardware project called "S1", the first incarnation of which used a CISC processor. The compiler technology necessary to take full advantage of the instruction set proved to be infeasible to develop, and the second incarnation was instead a RISC processor. The secret ingredient was laser pantography, a process which used a precisely focussed laser to etch the semiconductors of the chip rather than the usual photographic mask. The initial business plan was that they ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Fatality - The Beginning

With Street Fighter II dominating arcades, Mortal Kombat co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias wanted to create a fighting game that retained Street Fighter's gameplay without being a complete copy. Originally, the project revolved around actor Jean Claude Van Damme; this idea was eventually dropped and Mortal Kombat was born. Tobias and Boon, wanting to produce the best game they could, spent a great deal of time brainstorming and evaluating ideas. They started with Street Fighter II and retained many ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Flo Sandon's - The beginnings

Her musical career began in 1944, during the war, when she debuted in a Red Cross charity show. Her stage name Sandon's came by chance - it was an oversight by the illustrator who prepared her first record cover. Celebrity came in 1952 thanks to the movie Anna directed by Alberto Lattuada and starring Silvana Mangano, Vittorio Gassmann and Raf Vallone. Flo Sandon's did not appear in the movie itself, but she performed two songs of the movie sound track, T'ho voluto ben and El negro Zumbon. Both were great hits. Nat King Cole liked so much T'ho voluto ben that a few years later he reco ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - The Snowman - Alternate beginning

After the initial showing on Channel 4, and in its initial showings on U.S. television, an alternative introduction was sometimes used. Instead of Raymond Briggs describing how much it had snowed the winter he made The Snowman, while walking through the field that morphed into the animation of the same landscape, David Bowie was shown walking into a boy's room reciting the same speech while holding a scarf that resembles the one given to the boy towards the end of the film. The Universal DVD The Snowman & Father Christmas (902 030 - 11), ...

In 1929, a Swedish immigrant by the name of Nils Testor purchased the assets of a struggling Rockford adhesives company owned by fellow Swede Axel Karlson. Karlson had been producing a product known as "Karlson's Klister", which was originally intended for use in the repair of women's stockings, but had quickly found use in other applications as well. By the time Testor came along, cobblers had become the product's primary market. Coming to the conclusion that the only way to save his new acquisition was to sell the product to additional mar ...

Genovese started his Mafia career serving Joe Masseria and worked with people like Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegel, and Frank Costello. After World War I, Salvatore Maranzano introduced Genovese to the family headed by Luciano. After a while Maranzano began to realize that these young men would be a threat to his undisputed crown within the mafia, so he made a hit list that included Genovese amongst others. Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Gumby - The beginning years

Created by Art Clokey, Gumby had its genesis in a 1955 theatrical short called "Gumbasia", which featured similar claymation characters. Gumby himself first appeared on the Howdy Doody show in 1956 and was given his own NBC series in 1957. Female voice actors originally supplied the voice of the title character during the initial episodes. Newly produced episodes were added in 1962 (by which time Dallas McKinnon became the voice of Gumby), and 1966-67. Besides Pokey (voiced by creator Clokey) and his dog Nopey, Gumby's pals included Prickle (a yellow dinosaur), and Goo (a ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Hamburger Schule - Beginnings

In the late 1980s, a new musical scene was emerging in Hamburg compromising a number of bands that sung in German but that had no record deals (with the exception of Die Antwort). To remedy this situation and to give the new style a platform, the record label L'age d'or (French for Golden Age) was established in October 1988 by Carol von Rautenkranz and Pascal Fuhlbrügge. They signed contracts with many bands and published numerous albums. A great deal of the albums were produced by Chris von Rautenkranz, Carol's brothe ...

Some 600 years ago, Persian-born Prophet Pir Sadruddin arrived in Sindh in India. There are a number of myths about his origins. Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Michael Palmer - Beginnings

Michael Palmer's first stirrings as a poet occurred in the early 1960's. Palmer's 'moment', as such, was two-fold. First, he edited the journal Joglars with fellow poet Clark Coolidge and published his first poems. Secondly, he attended the now famous Vancouver Poetry Conference in 1963. And for those who attended the Vancouver Conference or learned about it later on, it was apparent that the poetics of Charles Olson, proprioceptive or Projectivist in its concerns, would exert considerable and significant influence on the new generation of artists and poets emerging in late 1950's thro ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Ryan Giggs - Beginnings

Giggs had his beginning with Manchester City and was signed as a young 14 year old by the club after being spotted on the streets of Manchester. Giggs' talent was so mercurial that Alex Ferguson literally made it a point to go down to the boy's house, knock on his door and urge him to sign for United instead, waving YTS Scheme forms with the opportunity to turn professional in three years in front of the boy, who grabbed at the chance of a li ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Tuskegee Airmen - Beginnings

Prior to the Tuskegee Airmen all combat pilots had been white. However a series of legislative moves by the United States Congress in 1941 forced the Air Corps to form an all-black combat unit, much to the War Department's chagrin. In response they set up a system to accept only those with a level of flight experience or higher education that they expected to be hard to fill, a half-hearted effort to eliminate the unit before it could begin. This policy backfired, and soon the Air Corps was receiving ap ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - WHRW - Beginnings as a radio workshop

Details about the beginnings of "The Harpur Radio Workshop" are few and far between (in the 50s, SUNY Binghamton was simply called "Harpur College," thus the name of the organization). In 1954, a loose organization formally calls "The Radio Workshop of Harpur College" is formed, and it seems that its primary function was to connect interested college students with area commercial radio stations and get the ...

Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Culdee - Early Beginnings

It was long fondly imagined by Protestant and especially by Presbyterian writers that they had preserved primitive Christianity free from Roman corruptions in one remote corner of western Europe, a view enshrined in Thomas Campbell’s Reullura: Peace to their shades. Beginning: Encyclopedia II - Bernard Baruch - Beginnings

Bernard Baruch was born in Camden, South Carolina, on Friday August 19, 1870, to Simon and Belle Baruch. He was the second of four sons. His father Simon was a German immigrant who came to America in 1855 to avoid conscription in the Prussian army, but, alas, military service was Simon Baruch's destiny -- so he became a field surgeon on the staff of Robert E. Lee for the Confederate army during the Civil War. In 1881, the family moved to New York City, and Bernard Baruch graduated from the City College of New York eight years later. Shortly thereafter, he was hired for his firs ...
