Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Battle of Stångebro - Background

Main articles: Foundation of Modern Sweden and Sigismund of Sweden When King John III of Sweden died in 1592, his son Sigismund inherited the throne, despite his Catholic upbringing and despite already being King of Poland-Lithuania. However, he was refused coronation unless he agreed to the conditions of a clerical convention in Uppsala, making Sweden decisively protestant. The debate was resolved in 1594, and freedom of religion was proclaimed, although only protestants could hold high offices. The nobility also sought greate ...

Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Charles IX of Sweden - Duke Charles

In 1568 he was the real leader of the rebellion against Eric, but took no part in the designs of his brother John III of Sweden against the unhappy king after his deposition. Indeed, Charles's relations with John were always more or less strained. He had no sympathy with John's High-Church tendencies on the one hand, and he sturdily resisted all the king's endeavours to restrict his authority as Duke of Södermanland on the other. The nobility and the majority of the Riksdag of the Estates supported John, however, in his endeavours to unify ...

Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Swedish War - Polish-Sweden War of 1600-1611

The conflict between Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden can trace its roots to the War against Sigismund, where Sigismund III, at one time king of both the Commonwealth and Sweden, lost the throne of Sweden during the civil war (1597-1599). Few Commonwealth troops participated in this conflict, and it is mostly regarded as a Swedish civil war, not part of the Polish-Swedish wars. After early stalemate, Sigismund was defeated in the Battle of Stångebro in 1598 and by 1599, Sigismund was dethroned by his uncle, Duke Charles and forced to retreat to the Commonwealth. This also spelled ...

Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Swedish War - Polish-Sweden War of 1625-1629

In 1625, the Swedes quickly occupied all of Livonia and Courland by the year's end. In May 1626 Gustav Adolf began the surprising invasion of Prussia. Gustav's landing in East Prussia near Pillau (Baltiysk, Piława]]) with over 8,000 soldiers came as a surprise to the Commonwealth and despite his relatively small forces, Gustav Adolf acting with the support of the Elector of Brandenburg quickly captured all of the coastal towns, with the exception of the largest prize: the city of Gdańsk (Danzig). Commonwealth received no support from its v ...

Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Foundation of modern Sweden - Eric XIV

Main article: Eric XIV of Sweden Events were already occurring which ultimately compelled Sweden to depart from her neutrality and lay the foundations of an overseas empire. In the last year of Gustav’s life, 1560, the ancient Livonian Order, amalgamated since 1237 with the more powerful Teutonic Order, had by the secularization of the latter order into the dukedom of Prussia, 1525, become suddenly isolated in the midst of hostile Slavonians. It needed but a jolt to bring down the crazy anachronism, and the jolt came when, in 1558-1560, floods of Muscovites poured over th ...

Having singed the Treaty of Stolbovo ending their Ingrian War with Russia in 1617 the Swedes, led by king Gustav II Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus), who was hailed as saviour of Protestant Europe, turned their attention to the Commonwealth again. They have expanded their gains in the disputed Livonia region, taking Dünamünde and Pernau in 1617. When the truce expired in November 1620, Gustav Adolf succeeded in taking the city of Riga after a few weeks of siege. Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Foundation of modern Sweden - Reformation

See also: Church of Sweden Thus the Reformation in Sweden was practically the work of one strong man, acting first from purely political and later from purely economic motives for the good of the state as he understood it. In this Gustav acted contrary to the religious instincts of the vast majority of the Swedish nation; for there can be no doubt at all that the Swedes at the beginning of the 16th century were not only still devoted to the old Church, but violently anti-Protestant. This popular Romanism was the greatest of all Gustav’s diffic ...

Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Battle of Stångebro - Aftermath

After the battle, the Duke and the King took up negotiations. Charles demanded that Sigismund send home his troops and surrender the Privy Council members loyal to him, and that the King himself stay to attend the Riksdag. Sigismund chose to leave the country instead, sailing back to Poland, but still surrendering the Privy Council members in question. Soon only Kalmar was held by the King's people. When it fell on May 12, 1599, Duke Charles had control over the entire country. When he asked the Riksdag at Linköping in 1600 for suppo ...

Battle of Stångebro: Encyclopedia II - Battle of Stångebro - The battle

Stångebro is an area around two old bridges over the river Stångån, Stora Stångebro and Lilla Stångebro. Today it is a central part of Linköping, but in the 16th century the city did not extend east of the river. When the forces of Duke Charles approached from the east on the morning of September 25, Sigismund's army charged out of the city and met them at these bridges. A thick fog was instrumental at hiding the troop movements from their respective enemi ...
