The Battle of Sekigahara or popularly known as the Realm Divide was a decisive battle on September 15, 1600 (on the ancient Chinese calendar, October 21 on the modern calendar) that cleared the path to the Shogunate for Tokugawa Ieyasu. Though it would take three more years for Tokugawa to consolidate his position of power over the Toyotomi clan and the daimyo, Sekigahara is widely considered to be the unofficial beginning o ...

Ishida, in his home Sawayama Castle, met with Outani Yoshitsugu, Mashita Nagamori, and Ankokuji Ekei. Here, they forged the alliance, and invited Mori Terumoto to be its head. Afterwards, the western forces captured various Tokugawa bases in the Kansai region. Within a month, the western forces had moved in ...

Battle of Sekigahara: Encyclopedia II - Battle of Sekigahara - Aftermath

Tokugawa Ieyasu redistributed the lands and fiefs of the participants, generally rewarding those who assisted him and displacing, punishing, or exiling those who fought against him. In doing so, Tokugawa gained control of many former Toyotomi territories. Ishida Mitsunori, Konishi Yukinaga, and Ankokuji Ekei were publicly executed. The influence and reputation of the Toyotomi clan and its remaining loyalists drastically decreased, although from the Toyotomi clan's point of view, the battle was technically only an internal conflict between To ...

Battle of Sekigahara: Encyclopedia II - Tokugawa Ieyasu - Biography

Tokugawa Ieyasu - Early life 1543-1556. Tokugawa Ieyasu was born on January 31, 1543 in the Mikawa province. Originally named Matsudaira Takechiyo, he was the son of Matsudaira Hirotada (1526-1549), a lord of Mikawa who spent most of his time at war with the Oda and Imagawa clans. The Matsudaira family was split: one side wanted to be a vassal of the Imagawa clan, while the other side preferred the Oda. This family feud was the reason behind the murder of Hirotada's father (Takechiyo's grandfather), Matsud ...

Battle of Sekigahara: Encyclopedia II - Tokugawa Ieyasu - Ieyasu as a person

Ieyasu is known for being loyal towards his personal friends and generals whom he rewarded. However, he also remembered those who wronged him in the past. It is said that Ieyasu executed a man who insulted him when he was just a child. Ieyasu's favourite past-times were swimming and hawking. He also enjoyed Noh, a form of Japanese drama traditionally identified with the austerity of the samurai class. Later in life he also took to scholarship and religion, patronizing famous scholars like Hayashi Razan ...

Battle of Sekigahara: Encyclopedia II - Nakasendo - Creation of the Edo period road system

At the battle of Sekigahara, northeast of Kyoto, in the year 1600, Ii Naomasa – one of Ieyasu Tokugawa's closest allies – decisively beat Ishida Mitsunari, commander of the "Army of the West". Signalling the end of one hundred and fifty years of warring and confusion, the forces of Tokugawa had finally defeated those of Toyotomi Hideyori, his strongest challenger in a bid to unite Japan under one leader. Three years later the Tokugawa shogunate was established, heralding two an ...

Battle of Sekigahara: Encyclopedia II - Hiroshima - History

Hiroshima was founded in 1589, on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, and became a major urban center during the Meiji period. The city is located on the broad, flat delta of the Ota River, which has 7 channel outlets dividing the city into six islands which project into Hiroshima Bay. The city is almost entirely flat and only slightly above sea level; to the northwest and northeast of the city, some hills rise to 700 feet. Hiroshima was founded by Mori Motonari as his capital. About a half century later, after the Battle of Sekigahara, ...

Battle of Sekigahara: Encyclopedia II - Ii Naomasa - Naomasa the General

Like Honda Tadakatsu, Ii Naomasa is regarded as one of Tokugawa Ieyasu's better generals. He initially gained distinction at the Battle of Nagakute (1584), commanding around three thousand musketeers with distinction. His finest hour was to come at the Battle of Sekigahara, where his unit outpaced those of other (arguably more famous) generals such as Fukushima Masanori, drawing the "first blood" of that battle. However, Naomasa was shot and wounded by a stray bullet as the fighting was dying down, a wound from which he would never fully recover. The wound also prevented his personal involvement in quelling the last vestiges ...

Battle of Sekigahara: Encyclopedia II - Yamada Nagamasa - Japanese settlement in southeast Asia

Yamada Nagamasa lived in the Japanese quarters of Ayutthaya, home to another 1,500 Japanese inhabitants (some estimates run as high as 7,000). The community was called "Ban Yipun" in Thai, and was headed by a Japanese chief nominated by Thai authorities. It seems to have been a combination of traders, Christians converts who had fled their home country following the persecutions of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, and unemployed former samurais who had been on the losing side at the battle of Sekigahara: "From the year ...
