On September 27, 1605, the Polish-Lithuanian and Swedish forces met near the small town of Kircholm (now Salaspils in Latvia, some 25 km. south of Riga). In addition, the Swedes were joined by an unknown number of Dutch, Scottish and German mercenaries. The opposing army under Jan Karol Chodkiewicz was composed of roughly 1,300 infantry, 2,500 cav ...

 | | | Battle of Kircholm: Encyclopedia II - Polish-Swedish War - Polish-Sweden War of 1600-1611The conflict between Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden can trace its roots to the War against Sigismund, where Sigismund III, at one time king of both the Commonwealth and Sweden, lost the throne of Sweden during the civil war (1597-1599). Few Commonwealth troops participated in this conflict, and it is mostly regarded as a Swedish civil war, not part of the Polish-Swedish wars. After early stalemate, Sigismund was defeated in the Battle of Stångebro in 1598 and by 1599, Sigismund was dethroned by his uncle, Duke Charles and forced to retreat to the Commonwealth. This also spelled ...

Damaged machinery can be fixed relatively fast or many of its parts recycled for use in other similar machinery. However, it is a much longer process with an injured horse, and one cannot revive a horse.
Some number of soldiers, instead of being sent to the front lines, were assigned to care for injured and hungry horses during the battle. A probable figure would be up to five percent of the fighting force, which limited combat effec ...

Initially only a part of prince's druzyna had horses, but with time the vast plains of Poland made creation of strong mounted units a necessity. By the start of 15th century, the core of the Polish armies was formed by mounted knights called to arms by the kings.
